Re: ILLEGIBLE
Is that because you don't have the whole document, or because you're having difficulty posting it?Sabino wrote:I can't post the whole document.
Occupation : Sxxxxxxxx ?
Last name : Axxxxso ?
If it is because the forum won't upload it... try posting to an image-sharing site like
http://postimage.org/
when you upload, copy and paste the "thumbnail for forum (1)" into this post...
If you can't provide the whole document... here is a resource that may help you with the occupation...

Re: ILLEGIBLE
I agree with Marty...
I was thinking "salsicciaio" - much of the ink is faded so you may not see each letter distinctly. I definitely think the 1st and 4th letters are "s" - and can not see another possibility right now.

Forse - "pagliaro" - maker of wicker and straw?

Sono totalmente d'accordo!Sabino wrote:Non hai capito.

Re: ILLEGIBLE
From seeing the whole document, I can tell it's written not by the mayor but from someone acting in his behalf: a clerk, at best a councillor. The last name looks like AMOROSO and the job looks like ZOLFERAIO (here mispelled Solfuniaro o Zolfuniaro). It was not that uncommon for people employed by the Comune to make spelling mistakes, expecially back then, when educated people were a rarity. In addition, if your ancestor was from Sicily, it adds to the possibility that he was a Zolferaio, (a sulphur mine worker)a rather common job in certain parts of Sicily in those days.
Re: ILLEGIBLE
Yes, you're right...It is salsumaro, which is the old way of calling the people that used to sell salted meats, such as sausages, prosciutti, etc.Sabino wrote:Hi Julo,
Yes the last name is AMOROSO.
Personally I read "salsumaro" but... for you it is possible ?
Thank you for your reply.
