Anyone up for a challenge?

Post by GOderda »

Hi everyone,

I just got a copy of my Great Grandfather's birth certificate and am really struggling to read what it says (both because I do not speak Italian and cannot decipher the handwriting)

Anyone want to give it a shot? I know my grandfather's name is Pietro Oderda, but that is about all I can figure out.

I would greatly appreciate any help!

Thanks in advance!

Hi Marty :-)

I'm seeing 26 October 1879 at 9:30 Am at the town hall for presentation, and birth on the 23rd as you stated... at 2 AM
Seeing father Battista Oderda's age as 51, but could be 56 as you said.
Wife I'm reading as Agnese Oderda, daughter of deceased Spirito, and she is age 36 and a peasant farmer as well.

Hi Marty and T!
I believe Battista's age is 51. Look at the "sei" in Agnese's age...

This is all great and much farther than I got! Do you think that Agnese's maiden name is also Oderda? I assume they would list her under her maiden name as opposed to her married name?

You are correct, women kept their maiden names, so Agnese's would probably be as listed on the record ORDERDA... :-)

If you find yourself looking for immigration records for married (and single) Italian women, you will need to search under their maiden name. That also holds true for death records from Italy. The deceased would be identified (listed) under her maiden name and if she was married then the name of her husband would be identified in the death record.
