DeMarinis/Porrazzo/Addonizio; also Lamantia/LoBocchiaro

Post by theograd »

I am unable to find information FROM Italy for these family names:

My grandfather's (mother's father) name is: Enrico DeMarinis 1857-1928, from Rome or somewhere near. Enrico's parents may be Almerindo DeMarinis and Teresa Fantosca or Fontosca. I haven't been able to find more, probably from around Naples or Rome.

My grandmother's maiden name is Luisa Porrazzo, 1876-1974.

Luisa's father: Carmine Antonio (or Carminantonio) Porrazzo, 1850-1924, born in Campanarello, Avellino.

Carmine's father: Ottavio Porazzo; mother unknown.

Luisa's mother: Maria Addonizio, 1854-1936, probably from the Avellino, Campania region. I have no more names. I believe she died in U.S.

On my father's (Joseph Lamantia) side: from Sicily, his father, Giuseppe Lamantia, 1867-1908?,and I cannot find anything else, which I desperately would love to know! Possibly from Misilmeri. Joseph had brothers with these names: Peter, Julius, and a sister, Gerolama, if these first names would help with any Italian naming patterns.

Joseph's mother: Antonina (or Anna) LoBocchiaro, 1873-1956, and her mother, Josephine ??LaCrisa?? (as stated on Anna's N.Y. death certificate). I have nothing else for her. she died in U.S.

Her father, Luigi (with an alternate spelling) LaBocchiaro.

Can anyone help with any of these?

At this point, I am looking for any and all ITALIAN records I can find. For those who came to New York, USA, I already have their arrival and ship information, so I don't need that.

Thank you, and blessings!

In order to find birth/marriage/death records in Italy you must know the EXACT town of birth since civil registrations are held at the town level.

Can you post the ship manifests or give us a link to them?
It helps us for reference...
Maybe we can see something to help pinpoint place of origin.

And you mention those who came to NY, USA - Did any arrive at other ports? and did you find their manifests?

Rome is in the Lazio Region of Italy.
The surnames DEMARINIS and FANTOSCA/FONTOSCA do not exist in that Region today.

Perhaps the surname for your mother's father was DEMARIN which exists in Rome, as do the surnames DEMARTIS and DEMARCUS.

When did Enrico DeMarinis immigrate?

I just lost a very lengthy reply to your questions due to timing-out (I guess) with my log-in, and will have to stop for now. I will re-ceate another answer for you another time. theograd.

Thanks for you quick response.

Grandparents on my father's (Jospeh Vincent's) side were Giuseppe Lamantia and Antonina LoBocchiaro.

Giuseppe and Antonina plus 3 others in their group...see #1-5 on manifest: Ship manifest: S.S. Bolivia, left Palermo March 31, 1898, arriving April 23, 1898. One or both are also in U.S. Census of 1900, 1910, 1920. For name generational patterns...their sons names in order of birth are: Julius, Pietro, Joseph (my father), then Gerolama.

Grandparents on my mother's, (Genevieve's), side were Enrico DeMarinis and Luisa DeMarinis.
They arrived separately and married in Manhattan in 1899. I can't find ship manifests for either.

Enrico arrived in 1886, prior to Ellis Island records as far as I can tell. Documentation: 1900, 1910, 1920 U.S. Census.
Enrico: birth, April 1857. Died: 1928 New York City. Enrico's parents: Almerindo DeMarinis and Teresa Fantosca or Fontosca. (A son and a daughter were named after each of them.

Luisa: 1900, 1910 U.S Census...birth: 1876. From Avellino, Campania, Italy.
Death in NYC: 1974. She traveled at least one time back to Italy.

If Luisa arrived separately you will need to search for her using her maiden name. Italian women kept their maiden surnames...
Do you happen to know this name?

EDIT: Found her surname PORRAZZO on the 1900 Census, father Tony living with them. AND on your original post

As for NY arrivals prior to 1892 - there are records for Castle Gardern arrivals at this site. Unfortunately, these early manifests hold very little information.

Do you have this marriage certificate? (These are surnames as spelled on the cert)
Demarinis Enrico Jun 17 1899 Manhattan 10047
Parazzo Luisa Jun 17 1899 10047 Manhattan

If not, you can request online at this site using the cert # and borough above.

I just ordered marriage certificate as you suggested from NY. Will take several weeks. I couldn't find any ship info from Castle Garden and I did search under multiple spellings as well as various extended relatives's names...with no luck.

POSSIBLE manifest for Luisa's father Carmine Antonio... :)

He indicated on the 1900 Census that he arrived in 1883.
You stated that he was from Avellino
His birth date is May 1850 by 1900 Census.

This arrival is May 3, 1883 to NY
Passenger 305 is "C. Antonio Purrazzo (sp?)"
He is from Avellino
Age is stated as 33 which would put date of birth about 1850 (pretty close :-) )

Here is the 1910 Census for Tony (Carmine) Porrazzo (transcribed as POROZZY)
Wife Mary is listed as immigrating in 1901 - probably with son George (also 1901)
Son Pasquale immigrated in 1891
They are all living with Henry DeMarinis and family - but they are at the top of the next page from the DeMarinis' :-)

Living next to them is Otto Porazzo, 27, who also immigrated in 1891 (another son?)
His wife Margaret was born in New York

Mary Porrazzo/Porozzy is listed as having 7 children with 5 living...

POSSIBLE death index listing in NYC for Maria/Mary Porrazzo
Based on age of 61 in 1910 Census, this is off by a few years, but not unreasonable...
Does the death date look familiar?

Porrazzo Maria 83 y Feb 11 1936 3850 Manhattan

Possible death record for Carmine Antonio

Porrazzo Carmine A 74 y Apr 1 1924 9423 Manhattan

If Luisa's mother Maria Addonizio was BORN in Pietradefusi, you can search microfilm records at your neaest LDS (Mormon) Family History Center. They have records for this comune from 1809 - 1865 available to rent and view.

As for Luisa's father Carmine Antonio Porrazzo

Luisa's father: Carmine Antonio (or Carminantonio) Porrazzo, 1850-1924, born in Campanarello, Avellino.

Here is a list of comuni (towns) in Avellino Province... as you can see there is none with the name CAMPARANELLA :(
http://italia.indettaglio.it/eng/regioni/campania.html

And here are all the small villages in Italy that begin with CAM... as you can see there is none with the name Camparanella...
http://www.italyworldclub.com/8000_ital ... ni_cam.htm

Where did find this town as the birth place of Carmine Antonio?

You may wish to write to the comune of Pietradefusi to request birth record of Luisa and possibly marriage record of Maria Addonizio and Carminantonio Porrozza.

Address:
Ufficio dello Stato Civile
Piazza Municipio, n.1
83030 Pietradefusi
ITALY

omigosh!!! There's so much here that it will take me some time to absorb, correlate to my data, much of which I've obtained through a temporary "Ancestry" membership. I cold not surface 95 percent of what you just sent.

I did have the Census, but neglected to "turn" the page to the other pPorrazzo offspring.

With some spelling edits, I found Carmine Anthony's and Maria's passports of some later dated in 19920 and 1927, confirming their birth dates and place of birth as well...eureka! Also, naturaliztion rcitation card.

Thanks... I'll be in touch at some time after I do some work!
