Although I don't have any specific information on your ancestors, I would recommend a terrific nonfiction book, Blood Washes Blood, by Frank Viviano. It recounts his search for the truth about his Sicilian great-grandfather, also named Frank Viviano.
Researching following surnames: Russo Tiesi, Terranella, Randazzo, Pancamo; and the following towns: Chiusa Sclafani and Campofelice di Fitalia

Though there is no mention on the above records where Francisco (Francesco) was born, if you think your aunt may be correct about his father's birthplace, you can write directly to the comune of Borghetto di Vara in province of La Spezia to request a search for Francesco's his birth record.

Address:
Ufficio dello Stato Civile
Piazza Umberto I, 3
19020 Borghetto di Vara (SP)
ITALY

Write your request in Italian.
