Ellis Island 2nd try

Post by tucker18 »

My g/grandmother Ann Sulla maried Nicolo Glaviano had 3 childern Rose, Tony & Carmela, Nicolo died in a mine cave in (Date?). Ann Glaviano left her home Palazzo Adriano, Palermo for the USA in 1906 taking Rose & Tony, as Carmela was ill. She joined them two years later on March 28, 1909.
My problem is that I can't find Ann, Rose & Tony listed in the passenger records, I can find Carmela two years later . I have checked with the National Archives using both names Sulla,Glaviano no luck .

I received all this information from my Aunt??

I'm now ar whitts end please help if you can.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Tucker,

Can you give us ages (or approximate) for this family? Also, what was their destination in the USA?

It looks like the manifest for Carmella is mis-linked. If you have found her manifest will you please post a link for it so we can review it for clues. My internet is running very SLLOOWW this morning. If you don't have it I will look for it this afternoon.

I remember your other postings.....this one was difficult indeed....... :?

By chance do you know Ann and Rose' full names? Have you ever heard of any other family names? Did they join a relative already here in Us?
Perhaps Ann had siblings, a cousin, Aunt or Uncle already established in the states......Did Ann remarry? If so, what is his full name? What about Rose......her husbands name, and place of marriage, as well as children.
Antonio and Carmela as well.........

If they can be located on a census, it may list immigration date and naturalization.......

I remember this one too. Couldn't find anything.

There is an interesting manifest for one "Antonma Glaviano" 12 Feb 1901 travelling with a Sulli. Possible relatives?

We need more to go on to find this one.

Tucker18, Did you identify Nicolo's manifest?

Took a look at Carmella's text manifest,
Carmela Glaviano
arrived: March 28, 1909
age: 13
from: Plazza Adriano, Palermo....

http://aolsvc.ellisisland.aol.com/searc ... 1552140208

Suanj or Mfjp would know more......but, would a 13 year old girl travel alone???
The only other person on this manifest from "Palazzo Adriano" is a
Antonino Vaiana, m, age 32......perhaps some relation???

Census info shows Glaviano and Vaiana in Los Animas , Colorado......could be a coincedence.....but may be a clue.......... :?

Hmmmmm.............maybe we've stumbled onto something Donna......I'll see what else I can find for Colorado.......I did look thru some of the Glaviano for census in Los Animas.......most immigrating in late 1880's and 1890's............and if I'm not mistaken.....I did see a "Nick Glaviano".....
who was a miner.........

Sorry everyone. Either because of the weather my internet is not working properly or image shack is having a problem. I can't get image shack to complete the process of hosting the image. I will try again later. In the meantime here is what I can read:

line 28
Glaviano, Carmela
age 13
Single
female
last perm residence is palazzo adriano (?sp on my part)
nearest relative in country coming from NONE
Final destination: St. Louis MO
Has a ticket to final destination
Paid for ticket herself
To friend or relative: Relative Seravio Battaglia?
Place of birth same as last residence

Carmela's manifest:

The problem earlier wasn't image shack. The file was too big to be hosted there.

Debbie

Can't post it here directly either. I will try and resize it.

Non Genealogy:
Had alot of trouble with this today. Had saved the images from Ellis Island as bitmaps and they were too big for image shack. FOund I could save them as jpeg and this made them within the 1024 kg limit of image shack. Lesson learned seems to be jpegs are smaller than bitmaps.

Debbie, you are right it is...
City of Palazzo Adriano Region Sicily Province Palermo (PA) Zone Insular Italy

But I do think the person she is going to visit is "related Rosario Battaglia". It should be interesting to see his manfest...

I think the address is 2016 Houford? St., St. Louis

mfjp

p.s. lots of Rosario Battaglia manifests on the Ellis database...

You all might be on to something, their destination was St. Louis, MO
Ann was 45years old, Rose was 21 years old and Tony was 14 . When Carmela came over she was 13 years old. Ann's husband Nick died in Sicily in 1898.
When the three arrived in St. Louis they worked in the tobacco fields meantime Rose married a (?) Moreno. After Carmela arrived she met a Frank Daugento and in 1911 they were married, & in 7 Dec 1911 the had a daughter named Jenny. Then in 1912 the moved to San Jose, Ca
I have not heard of anything about Colorado must be a coincedence

Roll 814
Page 163
St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri
Antonetta Soulla (not sure of spelling, Heritage Quest index lists Soulae)
