Rosa Bevilacqua/Luigi Bevilacqua

Post by greatcyber1 »

Hello,

I am looking for information on my great grandmother, Rosa Bevilacqua. According to the 1900 US census she was born Apr 1898. From a family Bible we know she came from Torriglia, Liguria, Genova. She arrived in the US 9 Nov 1897. The record states she planned on going to NY (where she arrived) to be with her brother and uncle; don't have their names - wish I did.

She went from NY to NJ and by the 1900 census, she had married Luigi (Louis) Mangini, born Apr 1871 (he arrived in 1894, according to census) and had a baby girl by then (4 months old) Teressa Mangini and was living in Pompton Township, Passaic County, New Jersey.

I can't find a church that has records of her marriage or children's baptisms. I've checked with several and dead end. There were 2 more girls born: Palmyra, born 1901 and Mary Amelia (Minnie) in 1903.

Luigi fell ill around 1907 and went on a sea voyage for his health, to Italy and died there.

Rosa (Rose) remarried Stephen Shutte (also from Genova) in 1908 in Wanaque, Passaic County, NJ and had 3 boys: August, Robert, John.

Rosa died 27 Sep 1936 in Wanaque, Passaic, NJ and is buried at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Butler, NJ.

The church records show Luigi being buried in NJ in 1920, so not a big help there.

I am trying to locate the parents of both Luigi and Rosa. Any help is appreciated.

On this free site you can see the naturalization papers for Rose's second husband Stephen Shutte (correct italian name possibly was Stefano Sciutto)... he was born in Fontanigorda, Genoa Province, Liguria region...
Steve stated that his wife Rose was born in Torriglia, Genoa Province on the day 10 april 1881 and that they married on 18 april 1906

From Ancestry.com the 1910 census for Rose and Steve Sciutto:

Have you noticed that they were living next door to Serafina (Rose Bevilacqua's sister) and Serafino Traverso?

I am wondering if these might be some relatives that I am also looking for. I have made a post yesterday re: Rosa Bevilacqua/Luigi Mangini.

In the remark section of the Ellis Island record, the area in NJ they are going to would be "Wanaque" and this is exactly where my ancestors lived. The area was then known as "Midvale" but the State Watershed flooded the area to make the Wanaque Reservoir.

My grandmother, Mary Amelia Mangini was born there, on the old Hook Road, which shows in the census.

I am trying to find out who the parents were for Rosa as well as Luigi. All help is appreciated.

After reading your post above about Rose's second marriage to Stephen Shutte, that "sealed the deal" about this being my great grandmother. She did, indeed marry Stephen Shutte from Torriglia (according to family Bible) and had 3 boys. The first child she had while married to Luigi Mangini (Teressa - Renie) was born in 1900. Luigi became ill and went on a voyage to get better but died in Italy on that voyage. We knew it was around 1904-7, so in 1904 my great aunt Renie would have been 4. I guess Rosa went with her daughter to get her husband's body.

I have a picture of Luigi that I posted on the ancestry message board yesterday.

Would you happen to know what the word "Budie" would refer to? When I asked my mother and sister if the name Bevilacqua meant anything to them, they both responded with Budie (don't know the spelling). But they said it was probably an Italian nickname such as what we called our grandmother (Minnie) was "Nonie" and her sister Renie was "Lala Renie".

If you have any idea...even a guess, it would be nice to add to whomever it belongs to in my tree.

Thanks in advance if you have any ideas on it.

You're welcome Stephen! I'm happy to help...

In italian grandmother is "Nonna" so it was normal for her to be called Nonie...

"Lala/Lalla" in ligurian dialect means "aunt" so "lala Renie" was for "aunt Renie".

I don't know for "budie", however Bevilacqua in italian means Drink water....

Question For Laura:

Would you mind telling me how/what you used as a query to the familysearch.org?

I tried to replicate it in order to better conduct my research, but no matter how I input the information for Rosa and Luigi, I do not get the same information that you did...try as I might.

The site seems to be a great tool but when I put Rose's birth date and birth town, or try the same with adding Luigi as her husband...zero responses. It makes me feel so stupid since I used to design databases for a living

So if you wouldn't mind...would you please tell me "how" you searched to get the information that included the marriage information?

Thanks again, in advance.

Stephen
