Vertino

Post by billoms »

I am looking for information on a Louis Vertino. He settled in Retsof, NY. All that I know is that he married Mary Senkus around 1892 according to the 1900 fed census (York, New York). I cannot find a marriage record with the town clerks office for them. I think they were married around 1892. Does any one have information on him or Mary.
Thanks
Bill

Bill,

I did locate a 1900 ship manifest for a Luigi Vertino, last residence Rionero, headed to Retsof to join his uncle Luigi Vertino as well as a 1930 census for your Louis. Do you have these or would you like me to post them?

Morning T!

I'm sure that's the nephew. And my guess is the family is from Rionero in Vulture based on a check of the surname on pagine bianche. Since Louis was in York in both 1900 and 1930, it's likely he was there in the 1910 and 1920 census as well. Probably with a butchered last name and/or misindexed.

POSSIBLE 1920 Census?
Looks like Louis' wife was born in Russia...
But it is a strange census... Louis lists his place of birth as Ireland :?
Could it be to "fit in" ??? Occupation here is also Salt miner.

Also, if Louis is a widower in 1930...and Mary is on the 1920 Census... death of Mary occurred between 1920 and 1930.

Name: Mary Vertina
Residence: , Livingston, New York
Estimated Birth Year: 1872
Age: 48
Birthplace: Russia
Relationship to Head of Household: Wife
Gender: Female
Race: White
Marital Status: Married
Father's Birthplace: Russia
Mother's Birthplace: Russia
Film Number: 1821118
Digital Folder Number: 4313450

Sheet Number: 11
Household Gender Age
Spouse Louis Vertina M 50y
Mary Vertina F 48y

Lou's from Ireland, wife Mary's from Russia, and the nephew Joe's from Italy???
Oy Vey!!

I believe you've found them; it never occurred to me to search without a country of birth as part of the search criteria.

I saw the ship manifest from 1900 but did not realize that it was the nephew. Mary was born in Lithuania (occupied by Russia back then). She was a widow and married Lou in Restof around 1892 according to census. Thanks for dissecting the information and finding place in Italy he was from. I am looking for a marriage certificate. Any leads? Thanks for everyone's help!

That's my best guess as to his place of birth but it's not a for sure until it is linked with some type of solid documentation.

You said you checked with the town clerk's office for marriage info. How about the county and/or church records?

Looking back at that 1920 Census, a few things struck me... (other than Lou listing his place of birth as Ireland :? )

--Listed as living with Lou and Mary is her brother, John Stowfras???, born in Russia.
He lists his immigration year as 1907.

--Mary lists her immigration year as 1893, a year later than the marriage date we're working on.

My thoughts...
We need to be sure the exact spelling of Mary's last name for the marriage record.
Maybe looking for John's manifest will help?

Just thinking out loud! :-)

Her brother's name must be her maiden name. She arrived in Port of Philadelphia in 1891 ( I have ship manifest) Her name was spelled Senkus which was her married name. Her husband John died in Lithuania. She married Louis Vertino. Her daughter Adeline (Dolly) married Angelo Cecere in Retsof in 1900 at age 16. The other daughter drowned in Retsof creek

This last name looks a lot like the nephew in the 1920 Census :-)
