Tuzzio/Mercecola

Post by Barbi48 »

I am searching for information on Charles Tuzzio and his wife Viola Mercecola.

Charles was born 26 Feb 1878 in Monte San Giacomo, Salerno, Campania, Italy. His name was changed after arriving in America. Records at Ellis Island show he arrived Nov. 1891 under the name Angelo Tuzio. His father was Andrea Tuzio, born abt 1835 in Monte San Giacomo, Salerno, Campania, Italy. His mother was Mariantonia Aluotto, date of birth unknown, born in Italy. I have no information on siblings.

Viola Mercecola was born 1887 in Naples, Napoli, Campania, Italy. Records at Ellis Island show she arrived in 1908. I have no information on her parents or siblings. The actual spelling of her last name may be incorrect or may have been changed.

Any information on how to find more information on their families in Italy would be helpful. Thanks.

Hi,

Viola correct lastname was Messercola, her place of birth was Casagiove, in the province of Caserta, Campania region.

At the time of her 1908 arrival she states she was leaving a sister (no first name) in Casagiove and was joining another sister, Angiolina Messercola in Long Branch:

From Ellisisland.org:

page 2:

the (payment) site Acnestry.it has online the civil registrations for Casagiove, this is Viola's birth act

Birt Act number 86 - Year 1887

Messercola Viola was born in Casagiove on the day 7 may 1887, daughter of Vincenzo Messercola age 30 and of his wife Petronilla Fattorosi?.

In fact, this is the 1907 arrival manifest for Viola's sister Angiolina:

8 june 1907

Messercola Angiolina, age 19, female, married, from Casagiove to New York, she was travelling with her husband Di Lillo Carmine, age 26, mason. He was in the U.S before, from 1903 to 1906, possibly he came back to Casagiove just to marry...

image from Ellisisland.org:
http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0026

from the italian databases on Ancestry.it the marriage act between Angiolina and Carmine:

Marriage Act number 9 - Year 1907

Groom: Di Lillo Carmine, age 26, born and resident in Casagiove, son of the living Michele and of the late Maria Rosa Gravino?

Bride: Messercola Angiola, age 19, housewife, born and resident in casagiove, daughter of the late Vincenzo and of the late Petronilla Fattorisi?

Marriage date: 25 april 1907

Barbie,
I don't know if this information might be useful for you...but as I was looking through microfilm from the comune of Ariano (di Puglia) Irpino [about an hour from Casagiove), I came across two birth records with the last name di Lillo
1. Guiseppe diLillo 4/5/1909
Father - Michele, age 49, contadino
Mother - Maria Addolarata Santonsisi (spelling may be incorrect)

2. Felice diLillo, 1909
Father - Tommaso, age 32, contadino
Mother - Maria Giovanna Cusano

if you think this may be useful information, I can make a scan of the record for you when I return to the family history center on saturday.

Thank you every one for the wonderful images and information. It's filling in many blanks that I was having so many problems with. I was almost sure the last name was incorrect, turns out I was right.

This is the first I had heard of her having sisters and I was never able to find anything on her parents. Having info on Carmine Di Lillo is also a great help.

Again, thank you so very much!

If you would like and information on the Fattorosi line please contact me.

All of the Fattorosi are from Lettere and I have been able to track the lineage back to the year 1206.

We have a very interesting history if you are interested in your maternal line.
