John De Rosa - Santa Maria Capua Vetere
Hello Everyone,
I am a new member of this board/website, and wanted to enlist the assistance of the members.
I am a second generation Italian-American who is traveling to Italy in late September, and before leaving, I want to see if I can research my grandfather (John De Rosa) who was born in 1884 in Santa Maria Capua Vetere (he lived there for some period of time as well), so I can try to find out if I have any living relatives that I can visit on my trip, or if there are no such relatives, find the deceased ones in the local cemetery.
Can anyone give me guidance as to how to do this research? I've heard that since S.M.C.V. is one of the larger towns with a number of parishes, it is not easy for a novice such as myself to do this type of research.
Also, if you happen to know of someone who can do the research in S.M.C.V. for a fee, I'd be interested in speaking with him/her.
Any help you can give me on these matters would be greatly, greatly appreciate.
Thank you for your time.
Grazie mille,
John V De Rosa

Re: John De Rosa - Santa Maria Capua Vetere
Hi Everyone,
Thank you for your kind welcome and prompt response to my inquiries.
Marty, I found the correct birthdate for my grandfather, John De Rosa, aka Giovanni De Rosa: February 24, 1888, in Santa Maria Capua Vetere. Other than this, I have no information on him. I don't even know his parents' names, or where they lived. I do have some limited information on my grandmother, Clelia De Rosa (maiden name De Rubertis), however, she was from Naples, and did not marry my grandfather until they had both emigrated to the U.S.A. in the 1900's (interesting they arrived separately and years apart!).
Hopefully you can see what you can find with this birthdate. Anything would be great! VJ, thanks for the letter to the relatives. Once I find them, I will definitely use it.
Thanks again to all of you for your help. This is a great experience, thanks to thoughtful people such as yourselves. I appreciate it!
Look forward to hearing more...

What record do you have to know his birthdate and birth location? What state did they settle in? Did he have any brothers and sisters that came over to the States?

Re: John De Rosa - Santa Maria Capua Vetere
Hi Everyone,
Thanks for your replies.
Marty, I found a different (and now I believe correct) date of birth for my grandfather, Giovanni De Rosa (known as John De Rosa in the U.S.A.). It is May 24, 1888. I got this information from my grandfather's naturalization record from the FamilySearch.org website. Perhaps that will lead us to a birth record? His place of birth remains unchanged, Santa Maria Capua Vetere. That latter piece of information was provided to me by my uncles and aunts, so I don't have reason to doubt it at this point.
My grandfather married my grandmother, Clelia De Rosa (maiden name: Clelia Derubertis) in August 5, 1918 in Jackson, Missouri. I believe that my grandfather had a brother, Nicola De Rosa (aka Nicholas De Rosa), who also emigrated to the U.S.A., however I do not yet have specific information on this. My grandmother and grandfather seemed at one time to have lived in Jackson, Missouri, then went to Chicago, IL, and then finally to the Los Angeles, CA area.
Justin, thanks for your help. Yes, my grandparents were from Chicago, IL as noted above, and the birth record you found is for my now deceased aunt, Martha Lucille Derosa. The marriage record you found for my grandparents is also correct. As far as the Teresa De Robertis record you found, I think that is not applicable. My grandmother, Clelia Derubertis, was for sure from Naples, not Putignano. So I think that the Teresa De Robertis you found is not related to me.
I have some other information collected, but I am not sure what you might need to continue looking for me. If you let me know what else might be helpful, I'll get it to you if I have it in my file.
Thanks for all of your help.
Ciao,
John Vincent De Rosa

Re: John De Rosa - Santa Maria Capua Vetere
John the records of Santa Maria Capua Vetere Caserta are not on Ancestry for 1888 that year is 1889 in there records. So your best bet is you would have to get the films from Family History Library
Morti, cittadinanze 1882 -- Nati, pubblicazioni, matrimoni, morti, cittadinanze 1883-1887 -- Nati 1888 / Film number #1802563 and search for his birth record
Do you have Giovanni's death record? That would have his parents names on it.

Re: John De Rosa - Santa Maria Capua Vetere
Marty,
I do not yet have the death record for my grandfather Giovanni De Rosa. He died in California in 1934, and the online death indices for California start at 1940, so I am having to get a copy via Vitalchek. You raise a great point regarding the years for S.M.C.V. records available on Ancestry.com. Jim (aka oilman19) is very generously going to go to the Family History Center to look at the film you identified. Hopefully that will do the trick.
Thanks Marty and Jim for your help. It seems the mystery is slowly being solved, thanks to you all.
