Thank you suanj. I am going to call my dad over the weekend and see if he can shed any light on the names. I noticed there are like you said variations to the spellings. If I could at least come up with the town in Sicilia. Thank you so much for your help it is greatly appreciated.

Dear Giovanni, really is an problem when many people with same names or surnames! But, just an my personal opinion, from an first search, I think that the probable birthplaces colud be Altavilla or Sant'Agata... and is very strange that also on ancestry no good results;Giovanni: you know if Antonino married in USA?

here are an ship's manifest that perhaps you no see why many mistaken, of another Antonino Scafidi son of Antonio(di Antonio in italian language), age 17 in 1900, final destination Chicago also

You may be unto something here. The date is surely right as this would make his year of birth 1883, which is correct. Also the destination being Chicago is correct. As for Antonio and Anna being married in Sicilia, we do not know for sure. We believe they were married after coming to the U.S. We do know for sure that Antonio was a barber.
Also they had 2 children my Grandmother Marie (b. 1908) and my Great Aunt Lucille (b.1906) both born in the U.S. in Chicago (Oak Park).
Thank you suanj for this info, it surely is the strongest lead yet.

Hi Giovanni,

I have been searching for this family without success on the census (1900-1930)

Antonio Scaffidi born in 1883 occupation barber
Anna born in 1884

children:
Marie born 1908 in IL – married to Steve Cali in 1930 and on the previous census I posted
Lucille born in 1906 in IL.

For the 1930 census. Was Lucille married in 1930? If so what was her husbands name? Possibly Antonio and Anna are living with Lucille.

Hi Debbie;

Lucille was older than my Grandmother Marie, and I know Lucille was married and had children, but when I do not know. I believe her husband's last name was Catrone, also Italian. It may be quite possible my Great Grandparents Antonio and Anna lived with them. If I speak with my dad this weekend I will ask him if he knows. Good point you brought up, I hadn't thought of that. Thanks.

P.S. My Great Aunt Lucille also lived in Chicago (Oak Park I believe).

Hi Giovanni,

I have looked at that one, along with many others. None match your family.

The link you referenced: parents Antonio and Jennie with children Rose, Ben, Santo and Joseph.

I have also looked for any ant* married to ann* with Ant* born in Italy. Tried various wild card searches.

Sorry.... :oops: .......only now seeing your post.
Naturalization records may exist in the county, city or federal courts.
Also depends on location...... :roll:
Am providing you with some helpful websites......you can send an email to the archives and they will notify you by mail confirming the existence of paperwork and how to go about obtaining them......If I am not mistaken the cost is about ten dollars for the naturalization papers.......

Thank you all for your help in this. I spoke with my Mother and she and Dad are going to get what info they can together and mail it off to me. They are both near 80 now and although still active have had to slow down. I am told that Anna is my Great Grandmothers first name for sure. But that the spelling on some documents is Genardo not Gennaro. I have not been able to find any Anna Genardo's on any manifests. On the other info I cannot honestly say, I am hoping by what my parents send I will have more info to go on. I will post that info as soon as I receive it.

I do know that on the Social Security Death Index Antonio is listed as Anthony, but I guess many Italians used the English translations of their names once here in the U.S. That makes me wonder about Anna. What is the Italian for Anna or is it the same?

Thank You Debbie and Suanj, I will let you know about what info I get as soon as I receive it from Chicago.

Thank you wldspirit for those links, I will look them over.

Giovanni

P.S. suanj

I looked at that record , another possible good lead. I will have to wait and see what info I get from my parents. I will let you know when I do. Thank You again.

Here is the record Suanj found at Ellis Island:
http://ellisisland.org/search/shipManif ... 4982050002
Great find Suanj!!!!

(I couldn't read the image shack link - writing too small)

This is a manifest that looks very promising. He is going to Milton Ave. This is where the Cali family lived. Antonio is single and age 19, so born in 1882.

I think that are probable someone of this 2 Antonio... I think that really was born in Altavilla;
for Anna Gennaro or Gerardo or Genardo or, especially Ginardi tipical of Sicily, no record again, but is possible that arrived in some other port..... we wait your next post Giovanni!
Good week end, suanj
