help with Irish ancestry

Post by roobyred »

Can someone point me in the right direction...
My husbands family doesn't know where in Ireland (could be Scotland/England...see) they came from. My mother in law always told him "you're from New York's lower west side. While that's true, at some point they emigrated from abroad.
The names are McMahon and Shepherd. I've found them in NY & NJ but just can't seem to find farther back than that.
I also have a Calvary grave site with 15 people (births dating as far back as 1793) that family doesn't know who most of them are!
Any suggestions?
Thanks Roberta

Hi Roberta :-D

Have you tried the Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild site?
They have ship lists that go back to the 1600's (of course, not ALL of them  )
You can also search by port/country of departure...

Good luck
