DeNunzio

Post by Kelly1376 »

Any and all assistance if appreciated. I am looking for the origins of my Grandfather and his side of the family. I have been unable to locate any records of him coming from Italy. I was always under the impression that he came to New York with his brother while they were in their teens, but I am not finding anything that matches this. Census records appear that he was born in New York state. What I am truly hoping to find is where in Italy my Great Grandparents came from ??

Grandfather: James T. DeNunzio May 1913
Great-Grandfather: James DeNunzio Estimated 1866
Great-Grandmother: Filonina DeNunzio (Maiden name unknown)
Thank you.

I have one record in my database for Maria Giuseppa di Nunzio of Oratino.

Maria Giuseppa di Nunzio, age 28, born in Oratino, daughter of Felice Antonio di Nunzio and Eleonora Silvaroli, married Marco Fatica, age 40, born in Oratino, widower, son of Cosmo Fatica and Maria Mercurio, on 10 JUN 1883 in Oratino. Source: Oratino (Campobasso). Ufficio dello Stato Civile, Registri dello Stato Civile, 1809-1910 (Salt Lake City : Filmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah, 1984-1991), FHL INTL Film 1761637/MATRIMONI 1883/Parte I/Numero 12, 10 JUN 1883.

I will check the birth records next week for Vincenzo di Nunzio.

I canvassed the period from 1852 to 1881 and found one relevant record for the birth of Vincenzo di Nunzio in Oratino:

Vincenzo Salvatore di Nunzio, son of Felice [son of the deceased Mariano] di Nunzio, age 43, contadino, and Eleonora Silvaroli, age 40, was born and baptized on 26 AUG 1861 in Oratino, Campobasso, Molise, Regno d'Italia. Source: Oratino (Campobasso). Ufficio dello Stato Civile, Registri dello Stato Civile, 1809-1910 (Salt Lake City : Filmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah, 1984-1991), FHL INTL Film 1353969/NATI 1861/N. d'ordine 39, 26 AUG 1861.

Note: Felice di Nunzio and Eleonora Silvaroli also had another son that they named Vincenzo, who was born in 1857 and predeceased his later-born brother.

I also found the birth record of his sister, Maria Giuseppa di Nunzio:

Maria Giuseppa di Nunzio, daughter of Felice [son of the deceased Mariano] di Nunzio, age 36, contadino, and Eleonora Silvaroli, age 36, was born and baptized on 23 JAN 1855 in Oratino, Campobasso, Molise, Regno delle Due Sicilie. Source: Oratino (Campobasso). Ufficio dello Stato Civile, Registri dello Stato Civile, 1809-1910, FHL INTL Film 1353969/NATI 1855/Num. d'ordine 8, 23 JUN 1855.

Based upon the information in the 1912 manifest found by Raffaela, it appears that Vincenzo Salvatore di Nunzio is your Great Grandfather and Oratino is his town of origin. Oratino is a beautiful little town of about 1300 inhabitants, located about 5 miles from the provincial capital of Campobasso. It's one of only two towns in Molise featured in the book I Borghi più belli d´Italia (The most beautiful villages of Italy). La Chiesa di Santa Maria dell'Assunta has been restored and is my personal favorite among the hill country churches. A historian once described Oratino as "a place where many arts in perfect taste are cultivated." There is probably no other town in Molise that can boast such a concentration of artists and artisans.

Based upon the information in the 1912 manifest and other documents found by Raffaela, it appears that your Great Grandmother was Maria Filomena Carozza and that Macchia Valforte is probably her town of origin. Carozza is the most common surname in this town and is more common in Macchia Valforte than any other town in Molise. The civil records of this town have been filmed by the LDS and I suspect you will be able to find more information by viewing these films.

The Grandmother of Vincenzo Salvatore di Nunzio (your 3GGM) was Agnese Maria Libertone, whose parents were born in Campobasso. We are eighth cousins via this line, our common ancestors being Nicola Antonio Libertone (baptized 15 MAY 1667), son of Francesco Libertone and Catarina Trombetta, and Isabella Antonia Presutto (baptized 13 AUG 1668), daughter of Carlo Presutto and Gentila d'Aucelli.

Thanks, Raffaela. Your posts led right to Oratino! I believe Oratino is not too far from you, maybe an hour?

Hello, I am new to this site / forum. I have an ancestor named Filomena DeNunzio who married Pasquale Colarusso/Colorusso. I am trying to find out more about them both. They had a son named Giuseppe Colarusso. How do I research on this site? Thank you
