Hello Ilona :-)

This is not a military record. It is an insurance policy (Polizza elle Assicurazione) in support of military combat.

The National Institute of Insurance will pay to Signore Angelo Mattina, the sum of 500 Lire in the event of death in combat, or injury received in combat while in service in war, of Sig. Salvatore Mattina, son of Angelo, born in Racalmuto in 1896(or 1876 - hard to read). I believe it mentions his occupation as Zappatore (digger/hoer) in the 217 Infantry, possibly 4th Regiment?

I believe it states that in case there is a request to defer payment to 15 or 20 years , the insurer will pay 1000 and 1325 lire, respectively.

Ciao Sabino :-)

Thank you for the clarification.

Sabino explains that:
1) 217 Fanteria IV Rep Zappatori = 217th Infantry Regiment 4th Department Diggers.

The 217 was part of the brigade Volturno with the 218th Infantry.

2) Here when you read "digger" [zappatore] it is not the profession but the position in a special department in the military. (part 4)

A man could be , for example, a mason by profession and become
"digger" in the department diggers.
