Have some questions

Post by ftino1951 »

Hello everyone,
First I would like to know how long to wait for a response from the Comune in Italy to get back to me from the letter I sent on 11/10/2013 for birth and death copy's?

I am also trying to find my grandmother's birth records in Italy. Her name is Maria Caterina Martelli Born Sept.9-1899 in Gaspernia,Italy is what I was told. I know she came to the USA in 1914 to New York on the ship Prinzess Irene. Her mother's name is Camilla Martelli, her maiden name was Camilla Lupiea. Father's name Raefili Martelli.

Thank You

Hi there

If you are meaning the town of Gasperina, province of Catanzaro, region of Calabria there are actually records for this town online. Click on the following for:

Nati 1889-1910 Matrimoni 1879-1910 Morti 1879-1910

or here to look for the earlier birth records: • Nati 1870-1888

Good luck.

Sorry, I don't know how long it would take for you to get a response from the Comune in Italy. Where exactly did you send it?

Well done Marty, you have bet me to it. I don't seem to be able to get my links to work anyway. I'll try this one and see if it comes up:

https://familysearch.org/search/image/i ... %3D2043789

It should be the start of the records for Gasperina.

Innocenzo Giuseppe Martello - Younger Brother

Post by AngelaGrace56 »

Caterina had a younger brother that was born in 1899 but on the 6 August 1899.

INDEX 101 INNOCENZO GIUSEPPE MARTELLO
Innocenzo Giuseppe Martello son of Raffaele Martello, age 35, Peasant Farmer, son of Giuseppe, was born on 6 August at 9.05 at Via ? Caterina.

The mother was Carmela Lupica, Raffaele Martello’s wife, daughter of deceased (fu) Giuseppe, Aged 35, Peasant Farmer living in Gasperina.

There’s a side note which I think says that Innocenzo marries Marianna(?) Lomonia (?) on 10 April 1921.

MARIANNA MARTELLO - YOUNGER SISTER

Post by AngelaGrace56 »

INDEX NO 11: MARIANNA MARTELLO

Marianna Martello, daughter of Raffaele Martello, Age 32, Peasant Farmer, son of Giuseppe Martello was born on 6 February 1897 at 6.20 at Via S. Caterina.

The mother was Carmela Lupica, Aged 26, filatrice (spinner or seamstress), Raffaele Martello’s wife, daughter of deceased (fu) Giuseppe.

Both parents were living in Gasperina.

There’s a side note: I think it says Marianna marries Domenico ? on 21 December 1922 in Gasperina.

There may have been another sibling born between 1894 and 1896. These years seem to be missing online so can’t say for sure. I haven’t checked after 1999 or before 1893 to see whether there were others.

Thank You Marty,
I was looking for the wrong name before,I just got my grandmother's marriage license from Pennsylvania where her and my GF got married. The way she spelled her last name was Martelli and her age was 31 in 1929 also on the 1930 census she was 32. The reason for all this is did a lot of people who came to the USA change their date's of birth?

With different languages and transfering data a lot of times typo's and mistakes were made in records surprisely records are as good as they are,Ive seen census records off by quite a bit in birth years. Her shipmanifest was very close saying birth about 1894.You have to be open minded with researching on dates and names

You'll often find that the date of birth that someone used in the US, even consistently on every record and celebrated every year, was not the date of birth that is on their birth record from Italy.

As for the year of birth, there is a tendency for people's birth year to get later as they get older.

I had wondered whether Domenico's surname was Clerico when I found this record and am pretty sure it is now.

Looking at Raffaele Martello and Carmela Lupica’s marriage record which Marty has posted here, it says that Carmela’s parents were Giuseppe Lupica and the late Marianna Clerico so Marianna Martello and Domenico Clerico may have been cousins?
