The first document is a memorandum and the second is a notification. They are not the documents called publications, but like the publications are part of the banns of marriage.

The memorandum basically states that marriage has been contracted between two parties (in the form of their solemn promise, which had already been made at the town hall). It was posted on the door of the town hall on a Sunday.

The notification reiterates this information and gives additional info about the prospective spouses, and states that they plan to proceed with their solemn promise, according to the terms of the Sacred Council of Trent. Again, this was posted on a Sunday.

Then in some towns, you have the first publication, second, and another publication which summarizes the first and second publications-all of these records are banns of marriage to insure that there were no impediments to the marriage-such as one of the parties already being married, etc.

I have seen memorandum and notifications in some of my towns, but not in others.

I think I have seen the memorandum document in only one of my towns in Matera Province and that was found with the Processetti. I have seen notifications though in that town and in another in Caserta Province. I haven't found this in any book, and am not sure that this blanket statement I am about to make is accurate, but I have not found marriage publication records with processetti which had the memorandum and notification records. It seems to me that any marriage publications records I have seen have been post 1865, and that you don't see the memorandum and notification documents post 1865. Anyway, this has just been an observation based on my own research. Possibly others on this forum will have found the situation to be different.

Hi there Dolores, Donna, Erudita

I’ve been looking through some records prior to 1865 for Saponara di Grumento, Potenza recently. This has been my first experience with the records in question here and I’ve only looked at six year so far. The way the records are set up for SDG (prior to 1865, so far anyways) are Births, Memoranda, Notificazione, Atti di Solenne Promise, Atti di Matrimonia, Morte, Allegati. (There are also other records like Diversi and Recognazioni but I can’t remember where they are placed now, possibly after the Morte and before the Allegati.

ALLEGATI: My Allegati are set out brilliantly (although often out of order and sometimes quite faint to read). First comes a cover page which briefly states the names of the bride and groom etc, next is the Atti di Solenne Promise and on this is listed at the bottom all the supporting documents which are required before the wedding needs to take place like birth records, parents death records, if relevant, etc (Allegati). Then comes all the Allegati. It then closes with the “ Estratto di Notificazione” (Extract of). I LOVE them! :D (Well, so far so good, anyways!) :)

Donna, Dolores, and Angela,

The three of you have been teaching me a lot too, and I also thank you for that. We should never stop educating ourselves and learning. Maybe a bit early where I am to be so philosophical, but that's a belief I try to live by.
