Leonardo Riccio

Post by joeyrabbit »

I am looking for information about Leonardo J. Riccio born 1869 in Italy, immigrated to the United States in about 1888 and settled in Chicago, Illinois. He married Inconata Scinto in 1895 in Chicago, Illinois. She was born in 1878 possibly in Naples and immigrated possibly with her sister about 1890 or 1891. My husband is their great grandson.

Thank you for any assistance,

Kelley

Hi Marty, I saw that record on ancestry.com, but it is not the correct Leonardo Riccio. Our Leonardo has the following birth and death dates. I cannot seem to find anything on immigration or his family in Italy. We do know he went back to Italy every couple of years, but no one seems to know anything about the family.

Birth 18 Mar 1869 in Italy
Death 28 Mar 1951 in Chicago, Illinois

No...that is what we are searching for...WHO was he, who was his family, where are they from. The family information stops with Leonardo Riccio.

Marty, BINGO!!! Awesome...I am doing the happy dance about now!

Tessa, yes, joeyrabbit is ME...I have info on the current family in the States back to Leonard Rich. We know he was Riccio but changed the last name (and apparently his first name as well) to Rich to "Americanize" it. I have no idea how to find his Italian past. My father-in-law is his grandson.

I did some digging today and was surprised to find the Scinto family, the entire family, in Chicago in the 1890's. There are records for the mother, but the father will take some digging.

You all are wonderful and FAST!! Thank you so very much for the effort and information! Kelley

I would suggest writing directly to the Comune of San Bartolomeo in Galdo, Benevento, in case the manifest is that of your Leonardo. :-)
The age on the manifest I posted agrees with the age and date on the death record (age at death 82 - # of years in US is 60 - so age at arrival about 22)

You lose nothing by writing. The request for a birth record for Leonardo is free.
You have Leonardo's exact date of birth and possibly names for his parents from the death record.

Address:
Ufficio dello Stato Civile
Corso Roma, 30
82028 San Bartolomeo in Galdo (BN)
ITALY

Tessa, you rock! My husband is speechless at the information; he is walking around talking about how overwhelming it is to find this information. I will get a letter out in the morning. Thank you.

It will be even more exciting if you receive a birth record for Leonardo! :-)

Keep us posted...

By the way... Do you know at which church in Chicago area they may have been married? There were many "Italian" parishes. It is possible the church has a record that MAY identify their place of birth. Just a thought...

Also...
if Leonardo applied for a Social Security Card, it is possible that his exact place of birth is stated on his application. You can request (for a fee) a copy of his Social Security Application (SS-5) ---
