Searching for death record.

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for the death record of my uncle, who died in 1955 in Trieste.
Does anyone know how I could obtain it? I thought to contact the state archives in Trieste, but I was under the impression that you can only access records older than 70 years (or something similar to that), due to privacy issues. I don't have my father's (i.e. my uncle's brother) birth certificate, so I can't prove I am a relation (other than sharing the same surname), so I wasn't sure what to do.

I can provide more details about my uncle, if that would help.

attaching an identity document of yours (passport), and filling the template I sent you by PM (I'm sorry, but I couldn't upload it to show it as a link).

I have a few more questions:

- So it won't be an issue if I can't prove I have a direct connection with him (with an identity document)?
- From your experience, how long does it usually take to get a response?
- How exact do the dates need to be for the form? I know that my uncle died in Trieste in 1955 from tuberculosis, but I have no idea about the actual day.

The year should be sufficient. Presuming this was some time ago, more than likely the clerk will pull the ledger book for that year, turn to the index of names of persons who died that year, find your uncle, and then use the associated index number to locate the actual record within the book.

A particularly generous clerk might even search the indexes for a year or two prior and a year or two after if necessary.

Johnnyonthespot - thanks for that! I was getting a bit concerned that my lack of information about my uncle might prevent me from finding out any more about him, so it's good to know that getting the record is still possible. What's your experience on commune responses? If I send the email in the next few days, when could I expect a reply, and when could I expect to actually get the record?

Lauratex - I've used Familysearch before, and it's a great resource, but the death records in Trieste don't go up to 1955. Thanks for the advice, though!

I've got a few more questions:

1. I was planning on printing out the template, filling it in, scanning it and sending it as an attachment. But, what should I write in the actual email I send to the Commune? I am fluent in Italian, so I don't have any problems with the language side of things, but what should I actually write about in terms of subject? Something like 'I've attached this form to request a record, thank you'? Does anyone have any ideas?
2. I'm thinking of requesting my parent's marriage record from the Commune as well. Would it be fine to attach both forms to the same email, or would it be better to send them separately?
3. I'm still a bit confused about privacy regulations, etc., because I remember reading about them a couple of months ago, but it seems from reading the template that anyone can just request a record from the Commune (not that it's a bad thing!) What are the laws regarding who can access the records, when, etc.?

I got a reply in one week.
As to the text of the message, I must say there had already been some interaction before they sent me the template, so it was easier. However, I'd write "Richiesta atto di morte 'name' 'surname' " in the Subject, and "Si invia modello di richiesta come in oggetto. Si chiede di ricevere il documento e qualsiasi connessa comunicazione via email a questo stesso indirizzo. Ringraziando per la collaborazione, si porgono Distinti Saluti." in the body of message.
