How is the surname MULE pronounced?

Post by Kent »

My uncle, Frank Miller, was the son of Giuseppe Mule of Bisacquino, Palermo Prov., Sicily. He came to the U.S. in 1883 and settled in New Orleans, LA by 1893. I'd like to know how his family likely pronounced their surname because he headed his household in the 1900 and 1910 census as Joseph Miller. By 1920, he was recorded as Joseph Mulla.......Kent

I think the surname could have been written Mulè having an accent on the "e" at the end. This does change the pronounciation. Try and see.

Above poster is correct. The way we pronounce it is Mule-A and spelled Mule'.

My grandfather is Giuseppe Mule' living in Queens. Him and my grandma came to Brooklyn when they were 18. I know there are so many Giuseppe Mule's but would be cool to find some relatives on here. There are not many in Queens anymore that we are related to, everyone is back in Italy. But I feel maybe there are distant relatives that even my grandfather does not know about or somehow we all have a relation as Mule's... maybe living in the same area in Palermo??? I know he definitely grew up raising Mules and Donkeys so I am assuming that is how the gave us the last name.

Frank Miller was my paternal grandfather's brother. His name was Angelo Mulla. Born 1898 in New Orleans.
