1588 Monreale marriage

Hello,

I would like to verify that the last name and town on the below marriage certificate. It looks like the last name is Sitivino and they are from Salerno?

Never heard of that last name before which is why I think it's not correct.

not sure of the surname, but I believe the town name is Salemi in Trapani Province, Sicily

Thanks Erudita. Now that I look at the place it does make sense. I'm so used to assuming their writing is so bad I assume the worst.

This is a real stretch, but I know the first letters of the surname look like "sit" but I also know that there is a surname in Salemi, Trapani Province, which is spelled Spizzico. So, I'm wondering if that could possibly be the surname, but I can't account for the third letter which looks like a t. I'm just brainstorming on what that surname could possibly be.

I believe I found it, April 30, 1588 Antonino Cammarata married Giacoma Sitirino or Sitivino

7th record from the top.

The surname could be Siti which is in the Province of Trapani.

This could be: Giacoma Siti vita (living in ) Salemi.

What do you think?!

I believe the surname is Sitirino, which does not appear to currently exist. However, on googlebooks, I finally found a reference to this surname. Not sure the link below will work-

The book is called The Jews in Sicily, Volume 12 Notaries of Palermo: Part Three. If you search Sitirino, you get page 7826 and a reference to an individual by the name of Giacomo Sitirino of Alcamo. Alcamo is in Trapani Province.

Very interesting. I think I have to look into this farther. I might be part Jewish?

I've had some luck looking at the Alcamo records through family search.

I find it amazing that one name that could be very common in one town is almost non existent in another town.

I'm not sure the Sirnino in the listing was Jewish, although there are many Sicilian surnames that supposedly have Jewish origin. When I read the listing across, it seems to indicate that, in 1457, he sold 100 bundles of wood to Muxa Pulvirecta, who was a Jew of Palermo.
