Searching for Vito Calise from Forio

There are a couple of people on Ancestry with Vito Calise and Lucia Restituto in their trees who have a daughter of Vito and Lucia named Loretta or Dora, born around 1896, possibly in Napoli. Do you know if this information is accurate. More importantly (from my perspective), do you know if her husband was really Sebastiano Scalia, as those 2 people have it? The reason why I ask is that Sebastiano was a 5th cousin of mine and I have his ancestry going back 3 or 4 generations, but it is not clear to me whether his wife was really the daughter of your Vito and Lucia, since I found what appears to be Sebastiano's marriage cert to Dora Castaldo in NY in 1918. Then again, Lucia's father was raised by people named Castaldi - could there be a connection there?

As far as I know, their children were Giuseppe, Rocco, Rocco Angela Maria, Francesco, Salvatore Francesco Paolo, Michele, and Maria Loreta Calise. I just realized there were two daughters with the same name.

i wonder if i'd find vito maria calise's birth record by checking 1858. i had thought it was abt 1850. i wonder if there are other children to find.

You should definitely be looking through the birth records of 1858 and if it is not there then look through the records of the years either side of 1858 until you do. Why do you think that he was born about 1850? If you don't find the birth record in 1858, look at 1859, and then work back backwards from 1858 to 1850. You'll be sure to find other relatives along the way as well.

Did you see that I located the marriage record for Vito and Lucia at the bottom of page 1 of this thread?

Yes, I did. Thank you so much. I wonder myself now where I got 1850 from. Now that I have the names of both parents, I can look for their marriage record and trace the family back even more generations.

I don't know why, but I've checked 1856 to 1864 records and haven't been able to find the birth record for Vito Maria Calise. I haven't even found a single child with Giuseppe Calise and Loreta Matarese as parents. I wonder why that is.

Whoops. I was in such a rush yesterday when I did the translation that I made a typo and no one has picked it up. I seldom make typing errors but I did this time. He was 35 not 25. So sorry. This mean't he would have been born approximately 1848. I feel absolutely dreadful. Sorry

I hope you found some other people in your history along the way. I can't even offer to help you look through 1848 at the moment as I'm expecting visitors soon. Good luck.

It's okay. That does make more sense. At least I know to look before 1856 for any family, most likely.

I just found the birth record for Vito Maria Calise. Could someone please translate this for me? I'm especially interested in the approximate ages for his parents.

Birth Record No 152: Vito Maria Calise
Recorded on 6 December 1848, 6 pm, Forio
Giuseppe Calise, 36, Sailor, living in this town at Strada Cimmiento, presented? (that's odd, I'm sure this reads female?) born to his wife Loreta Matarese, age 38, living with her husband. The baby was born on 5 December at 3 am and given the name Vitomaria.

Witnesses:
Gennaro Calese, 35, ?, Strada Piazza
Domenico Capuano, 22, ?, Strada San Vito

The Baptism took place 6 December 1848, San Sebastiano parish/priest? Here the name is Vito Maria Calise.

thank you. i've been trying to find the marriage record for the parents now. i checked the 1840s and didn't see it. it looks like alot of years are missing, though.

It doesn't say "femminile" (female), it says "fanciullo," which means male child.
