1879 Death record

I need help with the translation, record #79 - Giuseppa Giglia.
The record looks longer than the others, I am hoping it has useful information.
Thanks,
Joann

Re: 1879 Death record
The record is dated in Valledolmo Aug 22, 1874. The officials in that town received an extract of the death act of Giuseppa Giglia from the town of Alia which they then transcribed into their registers. The death record extract was dated in Alia on Aug 21, 1874 at 8 a.m. At 3.a.m. that day, Giuseppa Giglia had died in Alia, in the Rivajo district. She was the 50 year old wife of Francesco Costanza Sciuto ? (the surname does look like Scinta me, which is not a surname in this region of Sicily). She had been born in Valledolmo but was a resident in Alia. She was the daughter of deceased Giacomo Giglia and deceased Marianna D'Andrea.

Thanks so much!!
Re: 1879 Death record
You're welcome, Joann. Just note that the year was 1874 and not 1879 as you posted.

Erudita, I also read Scinta.erudita74 wrote:The record is dated in Valledolmo Aug 22, 1874. I also found this thread on IG with this surname, relating to the same town:

Re: 1879 Death record
The original death record is here: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... ,247372201
This records states that Giuseppa was the wife of Francesco Costanza, where Costanza is a valid surname in Alia. I don't understand where the surname Siuto or Scinta came from.

Livio
The Scinta/Sciuto surname was in this marriage record which T had translated-

According to this record I would say that the surname is Scinta.erudita74 wrote:Livio

In my previous post, my point was that the record from Valledolmo was a transcription of a record from Alia, and in the record from Alia the surname Scinta/Sciuto was not present.
All vital records (birth marriage and death) were (and still are) registered in two different books. Apparently in the case of Giuseppa Giglia's death record, one of the 2 registration did not reported the surname but the act sent from Alia to Valledolmo was the correct one.

I'm honestly not familiar with the records from these particular towns, but my initial reaction was that possibly these were towns where there were double surnames. The reason that came to mind is because I've had a problem over the years with the surnames in my husband's one ancestral Sicilian town. Sometimes the records would have both surnames, sometimes even in reversed order. Other times only one of the surnames would be used in the records for the descendants, or in a death record of an earlier ancestor. There was also a third surname which came into play with some of the records of the earlier ancestors but a town official there confirmed that they were one and the same family, which later records in that town also confirmed, and which was also confirmed by the marriage record for a sibling which took place in another town.
Anyway, I do agree that Scinta is the surname for these records though.

Re: 1879 Death record
Interesting you mention “double surnames” Erudita. After reading Livio's first post here (great thinking and find Livio!) I checked both Family Search and the Italian white pages and the surname “Costanza Scinta” was there but because I wasn't so sure that double names occurred back then didn't post. Thought I'd have a little think about it first. Maybe the error was actually in the original birth record?

Re: 1879 Death record
I'm looking for the origin of my surname Scinta
I'm curious what the results of your findings were?
Please contact me @ Blulou69@aol.com
I'm told it originates in Sicily though the only history I'm sure of (told about) is my great grandfather immigrating thru Ellis Island.
Luigi Scinta
Thank you for any info
