Someone found the following information on the 1891 and 1901 census for me I couldn't access them, possibly putting the wrong information in. Frank A Halpin looks a bit young for there to be a relationship, he would be only 17 in 1904, but whatever the links they are definite and stem from Chester as you said. Girolomo was probably working as a Musician around the public houses
The Cross, Neston
Thomas Halpin Head age 31 Plumber and Publican born Liverpool Lancs
Jane wife age 28 born Liverpool
Frank A son age 5 born Neston Cheshire
RG12/2871 Wirral Neston Folio 144 Page 2
1901 census
45 Frodsham St Chester Cheshire
Thomas Halpin, Head age 42 Innkeeper(Pub) born Liverpool, Lancashire
Jane D Halpin, wife age 39 born Liverpool, Lancashire
Frank A Halpin, son age 14 born Neston, Cheshire
John L Halpin, son age 9 born Neston, Cheshire
RG13/3373 Chester Folio 25 Page 4
I haven't found any more about the S.S. Haverford, although there is a web site on the ship but there are no manifests. I believe Ancestry. com has the information but I do not have access.
George
Hi George, this could be our F. A. Halpin ... age 14 in 1901.. 14 + 9(until 1910 census) are 21, but the difference is most little...we cannot know more and perhpas F. A. Halpin emigrated with some relatives....some uncle.. we cannot know this, but the age is very probable, again regards, suanj

If we take his age from the 1901 census which was 34 + 3 years to 1904 making him 37 and not 29 and abstract 17 years that would fit in with the 1891 census where he stated he was 19. Remember he had a daughter in 1904 who was 12 making him 17 when he and Annie had Maria. I don't think he was in England then. there are no records on any previous census's so the figure is probably 17 and not 27.
I have looked at the Roma and tried to imagine all the other letters being there, which could only be a like "P" "B" and altered the e's and the a's around but anything else doesn't make any sense. I have also thought about the different towns in England that the letters could represent but I can't think of any.
Hope someone on the forum can come up with some ideas or confirm what we have arrived at.
Best wishes
George

Hi George, I understand, but we have only this other trace for the search: the ship's manifest.
The age as the birthyear of Girolamo change in all data... this is an fact... he on ship's manifest declare that is able to read and to write, so I think also able to count...
In the ship's manifest, that I in this moment read again and again and again...., seems "been in Engl... 17 or 27 years- Rama( could be only Roma, and this could be to explane because you remember Picinisco proverb), also on line 11 are "austrian" ethnicity as the person, and above to handwriting also "Spilim." means Spilimbergo that was in Tyrol area(Tyrol is austrian and italian land, and in this age they think austrian)...
I think that Roma is the "area" of birthplace... and we must to search again, and to think about this.... if in england from 17 years, in 1904, he was emigrated in 1887, and this could explane because we cannot find in 1881 census....
the first marriage of Girolamo is in March 1892, so around 18 old or more, and this could be....and the first daughter, Maria, born in July 1892, and this explane the marriage: Annie Taylor was pregnant....
We must to search some other info, but this ship's manifest is very precious, because if Roma area is just, this circumscribes the region... and when are little info, also only to circumscribe the region is very important, almost second my opinion....
waiting some help and suggestions from all members... many regards, suanj

More: I found another little Girolamo Gentile( for the search about surname + first name, because for italian use are many homonymus cousin, and Girolamo + Gentile is very rare, no as Antonio + Gentile most diffused), well I found that this infant was in travel with the mother "Micola" or Miloca or similar surname... for search about Micola surname I found that was an family in England, italians, and as birthplace are listed ROMA... this are only suggestions, but we must search in all directions for to descover something again.... regards, suanj

Well mfjp asked an important question above...and I checked out the others listed in the 1901 census. They were organ and ice cream vendors... So this appears to be worth checking into...
Also, in Manchester...close to Cheshire....but many listed...some of whom could come from the same origin in Italy. Here is the info:
All living in District 2, St. George, Manchester, Lancashire, England, 1901 All listed with ditto's after Domenico..Organ and Ice Cream vendors. Place of origin is Italy, F.S. I believe this is just a reference to the term "Free State" as a lot of the Irish immigrants are listed as Irish Free State or Ireland, F. S.

Some of these surnames are unusual, coule lead to a location if you assume all from the same region initially. Don't know about England, but the Italians to America tended to settle where others from their home towns were already located....
The older generations who lived in southern Italy certainly remember the sound of the bells or the siren that occurred at various times of the day. Life was marked by simple and repetitive gestures: work, the relationship with nature, sharing with the family and the people of the small villages. Now...
