I have have come to a still point. Can't get past Alexander Mastio born around 1857 in Louisiana. I am trying to find a link between the surname Mastio in the US and the surname Mastio in Italy. Having difficulty. Any info would be helpful and greatly appreciated. I am aware of a castle in Italy called "the Mastio" but have found very little info regarding it. thanks

Hi! Maybe you should be looking in France instead of Italy.

I just looked at a census record of an Alexander Mastio, born 1857... both his parents were born in France. 8O

Look forward to your opinion on this.

1900 United States Federal Census Record info

Could this be him?

A 1910 census has an Alexander Mastia married to an Adelina, second wife... here it says his parents were German...

A 1920 census -has Alexander married to an Adelina, and again, parents were German...

Re: Mastio

My Grandmother told me a story when I was a little girl about the family being French and in an attempt to escape the French syndicate they changed their name from Masteiur (I think) to Mastio. I always thought this was just a story to entertain a young child but perhaps not. Now I am completly lost. I know that there were 2 Alexander Mastio's in New Orleans. Wilhelmina Vogelsanger was my Great Great grand mother. My Grandfather died when my father was 8 yrs old and all of the family history with him. When I saw the castle "the Mastio" I thought this was my evidence we were of Italian origin. I cannot find Alexander Mastio's parents. Any advice on where to go now? Thanks so much for the help!

Hi, personally I think that the surname Mastio was present in France from many long time... the first Mastio it appeared in 1668 year Salmbach, , Bas Rhin, Alsace, France, and in 1671 year in Neewiller-Près-Lauterbourg,Bas-Rhin,Alsace,FRANCE .. both places are mentioned in some genealogic tree of Louisiana....

1668:
http://gw.geneanet.org/index.php3?b=gl9 ... N;v=mastio
1671:
http://gw.geneanet.org/index.php3?b=blo ... N;v=mastio
for better help you must write in some newsgroup of French genealogy..

That does help although I am still puzzled as to why the name seems Italian. I guess only time and more research will tell. Thanks
