Ciao a tutti!
Could someone help me translate a marriage record. I specifically need help with the bride's father's first name and the grooms middle name. Thanks!

This is a link to the actual marriage record-record #21 on the left. The marriage took place on June 16, 1866 in Viggiano. The groom was 24 and considered to be of minor age. The bride was 29 and was considered to be of adult age. The other info in the record is the same as the info in the publications translated by Livio.
As to the publications translated by Livio-the purpose of those was to insure that there were no impediments to the marriage. They were published in both towns, since the groom and bride were from different towns. The first publication would be posted for a week and then would be replaced by the second publication which would then be posted for a period of three days. By the fourth day, the second publication would be expired. Then the actual marriage could take place anytime after that. In this case, it was celebrated on the 16th.

Re: Marriage Record
Thank you both for your help! I'm curious as to Antonio's middle name being "Maria" was it common for a man to have a female middle name?

Re: Marriage Record
Yes it was very common, intended to be a way to honor Maria, the mother of Jesus.mtoth1982 wrote:Thank you both for your help! I'm curious as to Antonio's middle name being "Maria" was it common for a man to have a female middle name?
Re: Marriage Record
Yes, as Livio stated, it was/is common for males in Italy to be given the name Maria, particularly as a middle name. It was not only to honor the Virgin Mary, but also to bring the child under her protection. You might find this link of interest

There's also a section specifically on Italian names. There are missing pages in this preview, but you can start with page 327 for Italian names
