It could be that the first name on the ship's manifest was wrote wrong? Because in effects a Giovanni aka John Miraula was in 1930 census of Los Angeles CA as a well Damiano Miraula and by the Death record:

My direct descendent is Cecilia Miraula, son of Nicolo, a sister of Domenico/Damiano. She married Salvatore Zito my g-grandfather.
