surname Scopino OR Scopigno OR Scopinho

Post by eric.scopinho »

Hi my name is Eric Scopinho.
I live in Brazil (Rio Claro city) and I'm looking for some information about my ancestors from Italy.
My grand-father (Joao Scopinho) was born in Brazil back in 1912. His born certificate says that his mother's name was Regina Scopinho and his father's name was Luiz Scopinho. My guess is that both, his father's name and surname are wrong. Probabily his name would be something like Luigi and his surname something like Scopino or Scopigno.
My grand-father's grand-father was called Antonio Scopinho and his grand-mother Rosa Scopinho.
Probabily Luigi came to Brazil around 1880 and 1911. Unfourtunately I have no idea about what region in Italy he came from.
Does anybody have any information about that? Any help would be great!!
Thanks in advanced.

Hi Eric,

Now per Ellis Island (which could be of some help with clues), the name

An Amedeo Scopigno came from Rieti Perugia, Italy

Most of the surnames "Scopino" came from Pietraferrazzana, Chieti,
Abruzzi, Italy

Unfourtunately, the "processo de casamento" of Joao Scopinho just have his father/mother's name and says they are originaly from Italy. No region. Any other idea?

I'm quite sure that the correct surname would be SCOPIGNO due some sounds references I've got comparing others surnames. And probabily his first name would be Luigi.
Since my grand-father was born in 1912, probabily his father was born between 1870-1894.
So I guess I'm find a man call LUIGI SCOPIGNO borned between 1870-1894.
His father would be ANTONIO SCOPIGNO.

another idea is the "espediente sucessorio", if your ancestor was owner of some land, house, and by testament in notary archive you can find some thing... however the Regina first name let me think that was from Veneto region..., because Regina is an tipical first name of this region and especially Treviso/Vicenza provinces...

Also you can ask the ship's manifest of your ancestors by http://www.projetoimigrantes.com.br/ and also in hospedaria do imigrantes http://www.centrodememoria.unicamp.br/a ... edaria.htm

I am a Scopino, and pretty much all of my ancestors came from a small town called Pietraferrazzana in Abruzzo Italy. Some of my ancestors migrated to Brazil and some to Argentina. I've found that the Ellis Island website is very helpful in tracking down your relatives. You should try that. Right now I am currently looking for my family from my grandmothers side; Oliveri is the last name. Last I heard from my father, they are in Argentina somewhere. I'd love to know them if anyone can help.

I am a Liberatore, but I have two Scopino women that married into my family. All of this takes place in Pietraferrazzana, Province Di Chieti, Abruzzo, Italy.

Angela Rosa Scopino (Aprox birth 1829 in Pietraferrazzana) married my great great great grandfather Martino Liberatore (Born 1823 in Pietraferrazzana) on 20 Feb 1851. They had a son, Belisario (named after Martino's father) on 12 Jul 1852.

Years later, Martino would marry Angela's younger sister, Lucia Scopino (Born 1832) on 16 July 1859. They would have a son, my great great grandfather Antonio Liberatore born on 27 March 1867. I know both brother's traveled to USA New York.

Where it may be somehow connected to your Scopino's is Angela and Lucia's parents were Carlo and Elisabetta Scopino. (No distinction between Elisabetta's last name is made in the Italian records.) I hope you find who you are looking for. There was a rumor in my family that one of the Italian men left behind their wives to go to the States. Possibly Martino could have left Lucia.
