requesting Italian Census pages

Post by Anizio »

Hello,

I recently acquired from a friend a page of the 1861 Italian census from the town of Mondavio, PU, Marche which had my ancestors on it listing the family, children etc. ( http://imgur.com/A3N0DHd )

Did all towns keep such records for the various Italian census that took place, or at least the 1861 census? Would they be kept in the Stato Civile/Anagrafe Offices?

If so is this something I can request from the Comune? Has anyone tried this and failed/succeeded?

I feel like these documents would be a treasure when specific dates are unknown, but I am curious whether all towns have such records from the census. It would really help for provinces with a gap in civil records between 1815 and 1865.

Thanks in advance!
TIP: When asking for records from Italy, do NOT ask for an "estratto." ALWAYS ask for a "copia integrale." A photocopy of the original Act will contain more information

I'm not talking about Stati delle Anime, I'm talking about the 1861 Italian National census, the first of its kind. A state document, not a church document.

http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Censimento ... abitazioni

Mondavio has the pages of this census. I'm asking if all towns kept copies of this census, if they're found at the State Archives, or if not all towns did detailed records when the census was done. I know at least one town did, Mondavio, since I found a record from someone there. I just want to know what other towns did.

If you look through the link I gave you it has both stati delle anime (church) and civil censimento(census) that is the only list online census I've seen in my researching.I have written many times for people in the archive and towns of Palermo province for census records with no luck I think they have censuses but they are page by page research like some of the parish census and towns wont do that.

Good Luck

What you received from your friend was a photograph of the Register of the Population. It was effectively a census of the town but not created for the purpose that we are used to. It was not forwarded to the State and was used solely for the purposes of controlling the local population. It was created in 1861 in many but not all towns, and often updated for many years with births etc. The books are too big to be photocopied and are often in poor condition, so often to get a copy you must be there with your camera. There is extra information on my website.

Ah I see.

My family from Pesaro e Urbino is very hard to search for since there are no 1816-1865 records, and even many of the Napoleonic records were misplaced, but they are all from small towns. The biggest towns would be San Costanzo and Orciano, so still small.

Thanks for your help, going there is person is a bit outside my abilities at the moment but it may be worth a few letters to various towns.

Thanks!
