Re: Martone, Angelo Michele Birth
Hi Dolores
I wasn't exactly sure of the spelling of "Moccia" so I have located the actual Marriage Act. Here it is with the translation below:
Index No 17: Angelo Michele and Carolina Moccia:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... 1067099068
29 September 1900, 10.05 am, Frigento
Angelo Michele Martone, 31, born and living Frigento, son of Giuseppe, residing Frigento and Tommasina Cipriano, residing Frigento.
Carolina Moccia, 32, contadina, born and living Frigento, daughter of the late Carmine who lived in Frigento when alive, and daughter of Maddalena Famiglietti, residing in Frigento.
The banns were posted on 2 and 9 September. The bride and groom didn't sign because they were both illiterate.

BTW: Here's a related thread:
Martone/Cipriano Marriage: http://www.italiangenealogy.com/forum/l ... na#p220765
Angelo must have been married before? Unfortunately it doesn't mention marital status on Angelo and Carolina's Marriage Act. I'll have a look shortly and see if I can find their banns quickly.

Re: Martone, Angelo Michele Birth
So here are the marriage banns (Index 19) for this couple and right at the bottom it refers to the Death Act of Maria Cipriano, wife of Angelo Michele Martone. So he was married before.
Banns for Martone/Moccia: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... :106140516
Dolores, the delight with your marriage banns is that there is some allegati either amongst the actual banns (like you see on the opposite page to this record) or at the end of the relevant year. It would be worth your while at some stage going through these. I'll see if I can see any allegati for this couple at the end of these records for 1900.

Hi Dolores
There is no allegati there for this couple that I can see amongst the film that I am currently looking at. I need to take a break now. Will post later if I see anything else of relevance. Enjoy your day.

Re: Martone, Angelo Michele Birth
You are very welcome Dolores. Yes, this also surprised me, recently, when I came across two of my lineage back in the mid 1800s, who remarried within two to four months of their first wives dying. I am wondering whether this occurred more in the case of a widower remarrying quickly (possibly because there were children that needed caring for, and he needed to work etc?) and maybe not so often in the case of a widow remarrying? Not sure.dmurphy1940 wrote:wow, 2 months! Thank you, Angela.
Interesting is, that I grew up with the impression that it was a bit of a “no no” to remarry after a spouse had died and it certainly would have been shunned upon if a widow remarried within a year or two. There was a custom that, mostly women adherred to, (it had a name and I can't remember what it was called right now – I need to find out): basically what happened was that the women of a deceased relative had to wear black for a specific period to show that she was mourning and to show respect for the deceased loved one etc. I remember mum and I visiting a relative in a another country once and we met an Italian woman there who was dressed completely in black from top to toe. Her husband had died when she was in her early twenties and she had been following this custom of mourning and showing her respect for her husband for twenty years!!!!
Well, on that note, I better go do some chores.

Re: Martone, Angelo Michele Birth
I have not run across any children yet for Angelo Michele and Maria but I think it is only a matter of time. He most likely was left with small children to care for. That happened to my grandfather. After my grandmother died he sent for a bride in Italy, she was somehow related to our family so they scooped her up and she came to the US to take care of my father and his siblings.
My mother always wore black for one year if anyone in the family died.

Re: Martone, Angelo Michele Birth
Interesting about your grandfather "importing" a bride after your grandmother died. I have heard of this before but not in the town I grew up in. I guess she would have been chaperoned on her journey to the US by a family member or other.dmurphy1940 wrote:I have not run across any children yet for Angelo Michele and Maria but I think it is only a matter of time. I think mum wore black for about a year after a family member died, also. Like most other immigrants, she had stopped doing this by the mid 1990's - only wore black to funerals and a short while after.
Have a "happy June" Dolores. What does this mean exactly? Is there something special you celebrate in June?
