Dated March 28, 1871 at 10 a.m. in Frigento. Appearing was Michele Famiglietti, son of dec Pasquale, age 37, a peasant residing in Frigento. He reported that at 3 a.m. today, in the house on Strada San Marciano, his wife, Concetta Genua* or Genna*, daughter of dec Marciano, gave birth to their son whom he was presenting and to whom was being given the name Francesco Saverio.

*Dolores, you had the following marriage record translated by Pippo in which the same parents appeared and he gave you Concetta's surname as Genna. It's honestly a hard call as to which is the correct surname in the birth record.

Personally, it looks like Genna to me, but it's really hard to know with any degree of certainty since both surnames exist in the town and sometimes the letter u looks like the letter n in the handwriting.

Have you tried emailing the town to see if they can confirm which is the correct surname for this family?

Dolores,
That's not the link to the town. I was just on the town's website and the email address for the stato civile or ufficio anagrafe is hidden, if it's even there. Let me look some more, and I'll get back to you later. There is a guy there though with the Genua surname whose email address is there, and we may need to resort to contacting him.

Thank you. For future reference, what is this agency? Should I reference Francesco Saverio Famiglietti's birth record?

The ufficio anagrafe (anagrafe office) and lo stato civile (office of the civil state) both belong to the Demographic dept. of a town. The anagrafe office handles things like the the local census and therefore houses registers of the population. It may also issue things like drivers' licenses and passport applications, according to Trafford Cole, in his book on Italian Genealogical Records. The stato civile is the office where vital records are housed-the acts of birth, marriage, death for anyone living or deceased. In some towns, these offices are separate and are staffed by different individuals, but in small to mid sized towns, they are usually in the same room and use the same personnel. The email address I gave you is for the two combined, so in Frigento, the two offices are housed together and serviced by the same individuals.

I would send the info from the record-name of the child, date of birth, record number and the names of the parents with the mother's name both ways with a question mark. If you need help, send me a private message, and we'll put together a short email in Italian. I would also include a link to the record.
