Mistretta, Sicily Birth Certificate

Hi, I'm gathering documents to apply for Italian Citizenship. My grandfather, Luigi Scelba, was born May 25, 1889 in Mistretta, Sicily--this year is not available on the Familysearch.org website.

I can mail the request to the City Hall of Mistretta, but I'm not sure I will get a response or a birth certificate from them. Any suggestions/help?

Is this Luigi Scerba brother Salvatore birth record who Luigi came to visit in the US? Are these the right parents? If so send this email

La ringrazio anticipatamente di voler comunicare i costi di spese di riproduzione e postali per ottenere il Vostro aiuto, poiche` mi necessita l’estratto dell’atto di nascita, in formato internazionale di: Luigi Scerba di Antonino e Nunziata di Marciano nato a Mistretta il 28 maggio 1889
Se non avete i registri corrispondenti, potete fornire l’indirizzo dell’archivio dove in cui i registri possano essere trovati?

Yes, thank you. Salvatore is the brother. The last name should be Scelba, parents are Antonino Scelba and Annunzie Dimariano.

Luisa, on the birth act posted by Marty there is a side notation stating that the correct surnames are Scelba and Mariano

Thank you for your reply--I'm assuming the name was changed at Ellis Island. If the name and date of birth are different, how will I be granted Italian Citizenship?

How was the name spelled in the US? The birth record that Marty linked to was from Italy, i.e., the spelling variant Scerba was not from the US.

It depends on where you apply for citizenship recognition, but you'd probably have to amend some documents to match the Italian birth cert. In particular, make sure that Luigi's surname doesn't change in the US unless there is a record of a legal name change, and also make his date of birth consistent on his death cert. If you have a discrepancy in his naturalization paperwork you may need to take more drastic action.

Hello,
My grandfather's death certificate has the name Luigi Scelba, Date of Birth as May 25, 1889. The naturalization paperwork has Luigi Scelba as well. I did send the email to Mistretta as written above, but no response back. How long does it usually take?

So his name is consistently Scelba. You haven't seen his birth cert yet so you don't know if the DOB on his death cert is correct. What about his DOB on his naturalization papers? So far I don't see a discrepancy.

Hi, sorry it took so long to respond, by son has the papers. The date of birth is May 25, 1889 on the naturalization papers. I will try and find another email address, I've had no response. Luisa
