US presidential hopeful Ted Cruz does not have dual citizenship with Italy, as some may surmise.
His mother, Eleanor Darragh was born in St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington, Delaware on November 23, 1934.
Her mother, Cruz's grand-mother Elizabeth Cekine (anglecized Abruzzese surname) was also born in Wilmington, Delaware in 1912.
Even if Cruz's great-grandfather from Abruzzo (correct cognome Cecchini) naturalized after the birth of Cruz's grand-mother, she could not have passed Italian citizenship to Cruz's mother who was born in 1934 or to any other offspring born before 1948.
The fact that Ted Cruz could pursue an Italian court case for recognition of jure sanguinis citizenship based on 1948 rule is irrelevent because doing so is not part of Italian citizenship law.
