LaCerva?, LaCerba surname
Hi all,
I'm having a really hard time finding any info on the surname Lacerba from Palermo. I've looked in every genealogy website I could find and nothing. There are there few with the surname "Lacerva", but seem are not related to mine. Domenico LaCerba born in Palermo about 1880, according to his WW1 draft card. On census states he immigrated 1906-07.
Can't find him on ship lists, and I can't find a death record for him. He died in Chicago, IL about 1966. His wife was Giuseppina Saluzzo, and I've tried every name spelling I could think of and can't find her on ship lists, either, however I found a ship list in 1907 for her mother, Calogera Cerniglia, going to her s-i-l Domenico Lacerba.
Domenico and Giuseppina's children were born in Chicago, the oldest in 1908, he married Rose and there are only 3 Lacerbas in the SSDI, all mine and don't help. Nothing at LDS, either.
Does anyone know anything more? Could sure use some help!

Re: LaCerva?, LaCerba surname
I encountered much of the same with my family. The information was there, but names were misspelled badly. Please list all infos you do have as it will help to find your family. Names of all children and birth years, any known siblings of the parents.
There are members here who are great at finding elusive manifest....
Also, have you checked for naturalization papers? Did they always reside in Illinois?

Census for family, all names do not match with your info, however,
the address is the same as war registration card, Cambridge Avenue.

Re: LaCerva?, LaCerba surname
wldspirit, thanks
Yes, that's them, I have the same info (draft and census 1920-30)...
"Katie", the m-i-l is Josephines' mother: her real name was Calogera, maiden name Cerniglia(her married name was Saluzzo) and she came in 1907, have her manifest. The last name I'm looking for is "LaCerba" and it has made it impossible for me to find any sibs/parents for Domenico, I've tried all kinds of spellings based on handwriting mistakes(ie "b" looks like "f", etc.) and sounding (that's how I found his draft card-I guess he couldn't read, I assume someone else filled in the form because he signed with an x), and I even looked up "LaGierba" just in case it WAS the right spelling, since that's how it's pronounced, but no luck at all on that one. The child Santos is Joseph, he was born and died in IL, but I'm not allowed his birth cert. because I'm not him or his parent. His death cert. lists his parents, born in "Italy", which I already know. I cannot find a death certificate for Domenico, but according to my sis-i-law (it was her grandfather), he died in Chicago in 1966 or 65, and none of them remember where he was buried since they were young.
I feel unless I can find some kind of ship manifest I have no hope on this one. Now, I have Domenico's birthdate(according to the draft), which may help me get a record of birth from Italy, but I have no idea where in Palermo he was born(it wasn't in Palermo City, it was a smaller town in the province, which nobody remembers the name of).
Now I know Calogera was born in Campo Felice de roccella, I have her d.c. which shows her parents, etc., my problem is the LaCerba side(paternal), and according to what I'm told Domenico and Josephine were from different towns in Palermo, so I guess Campo Felice is not where to look for Domenico's record.
I really appreciate any suggestions!

Re: LaCerva?, LaCerba surname
Oh, wldspirit, almost forgot-
Yes, when they got to Chicago they stayed there, and all of the children were born in Chicago also, Joseph died in Niles as did his wife Rose, and Frieda(Sam's wife) also died. My s-i-l knows nothing of the female children born to them, and as of yet I haven't found them in the SSDI(only the three mentioned are listed), most likely the women got married so who knows what thier last name would be. Maiden names would be LaCerba, though. Samuel was in McHenry, but that was over 30 years ago, and s-i-l lost contact. Most likely Sam would have had the same info, though, as I heard the family had been trying to find more info years ago after Domenico died, with no luck. They had no contact with family in Italy.
Thanks!

Re: LaCerva?, LaCerba surname
This is a longshot on his manifest.
But a few things in common.
Domenico ACERBI
Ship CALABRIA
27 Apr 1906 from Palermo
25 years old
Married
Farmhand
from Mezzoiuso (Palermo, Sicily?)
to Chicago, Il
staying with brother-in-law Michaelagelo Cossitino?
at 67 Milton Ave, Chicago, Il
This is same 'staying with address' for
Calogero CERNIGLIA (m-i-l)
Ship Calabria
8 Jun 1907
and her neice
Rosina GIGLIO
You indicated you have this manifest --
Calogero staying with son Girolamo SALLUZZO
Rosina staying with father Benedetto GIGLIO
same address for both: 67 Milton Ave
I hope this helps, Valarie

Re: LaCerva?, LaCerba surname
ricbru, vj
OMG I think that's him! How did you ever do that? I never ever thought of trying such a spelling for LaCerba-"Acerbi".
It has to be him, on that date in 1907 he would have been 25 years old, plus he's going to the same address his mother-in-law ended up at!
I can't thank you enough. I'm going to try to pull up that manifest(ellisisland database, right?) Even the Town for Domenico is different, just as I was told! Thanks so much for your help!

Re: LaCerva?, LaCerba surname
Nice work VJ.........
Note that on the 1920 census, taken in January of that year, Domenico
has filed for naturalization.

Re: LaCerva?, LaCerba surname
Thank you,
I'm really glad I could help.
How?
I checked the phone book
http://www.paginebianche.it/execute.cgi ... =&ind=&nc=
and noticed that one listing had a
L'ACERBA
So, I tried dropping the L on the Steve Morse site.
Everyone on this site has been fantastic, I just want to help when I can.
Congratulations finding another link to your family, Valarie
