I found a notation above several of my ancestors' names that read as an Mag with a superscript of t or an M with a superscript of ro
Does anyone know what this means? It appears to denote the title of Marchio.

Re: Strange Notation
I think the abbreviation you are seeing is for the Latin word magistro which is the equivalent of the Italian word maestro. It means master or expert of his trade, or it can mean teacher.

Oh! I did notice that the ancestors were often father-and-son, and the other one's roots I haven't traced yet.
