Erudita,

When you are in doubt about the spelling of a surname, what website(s) do you use to help you resolve the surname in question ? This is the one that I use most of the time: http://italia.indettaglio.it/eng/cognom ... olise.html.

Thanks for your help with the name: Eufemia Iacovelli.

I often use the following website to help with surnames, but it isn't foolproof.

http://www.avitrees.com/welcome.jsp

First I search using the town in question, such as Gambatesa. If I don't see a surname which I think matches what I see in a record, or is similar in spelling, then I try searching the main town in the province in which the town is located. If that fails, I sometimes look at other towns in the same province and, if that fails, then I search the main towns in nearby provinces.

For street names, I use the following website, but over time, some have changed names. There is no way knowing that from this website though:

Erudita,

Thanks for the information. I like your system for researching the surnames; I never thought of this!

There was actually a time when you could search surnames in a town using the Italian online phonebook. I remember doing this when I first started my own Italian research about 19 years ago. You used to be able to type in the first letter of a surname, and the town name, and you would get all of the entries in the phonebook under that particular letter for that town. It was time consuming, but it did help a lot, but it seems you can't do that anymore. Also, don't forget the importance of the indices with the records. Sometimes surnames in a town become obsolete, but if you search the indices from the town's earliest records you can access, they may be there. Again, this can be time consuming, but sometimes it's worth the effort.

BTW, I think you're doing really well reading the records.

Erudita,

Thanks for sharing your knowledge with this rest of us. You have me beat; I have only been doing Italian research about 9 years.
