Below are 1870 birth and death records of daughter Rosa Maria Arlotti-of (Rocco) Vincenzo Arlotti and Angela Maria Videtta. The birth record has Rocco Vincenzo, son of Giuseppe, at age 25, and Angela Videtta at age 21. His age is given as 26 in the death record. The important thing with these records is that we can see that Angela had given birth to a child in 1870 who had also died a few months later (born in Jan.; died in Aug). So she was a lactating woman, a requirement for her being a wetnurse, since infants were breastfed. Also, since this infant was born on Jan 22nd, and Michele was born on Sept 2nd, it's a hard call to say whether she was the natural mother of Michele who had come forward to serve as his wetnurse.

I looked again through the marriage records in Pignola which begin in 1866 and Vincenzo and Angela are not there. All of the other records in which they are mentioned say they were residents in Pignola. None give that or anywhere else as their town(s) of birth. I also haven't looked to see if they had other children born prior to 1870. That would also be important to narrowing down the year of their marriage.
in the catalog of family search it says that prior to 1863 Pignola was Vignola and there are online records for that town

Pignola, Potenza - Birth Record
Re: Pignola, Potenza - Birth Record
Rocco Vincenzo Arlotti born Jan 6, 1839 in Vignola (Pignola) to Giuseppe Arlotti and Maria Rosa Perrucci. In the index, it says Francesco Maria Arlotti, but there is no twin.

He had a brother named Michele Maria Arlotti born on May 18, 1846, also in Vignola (Pignola)
I've done the marriage records back to 1834 looking for the parents and still nothing.,

This is incredible work. You certainly know how to conduct effective research in this area! What an interesting story to know that this woman took Michele in as a foundling. Thanks, Erudita.
If Rocco Vincenzo died at age 26, wouldn't that explain why Michele couldn't be legally adopted? Perhaps Rocco has a brother James, who married Maria Videtta after he died and then went over to the U.S. together where Michele changed his name.
At this point, I'm probably going to focus on the name change. I simply need to prove that Michael Sperduto is the same person as Michele Arlotto, which is going to be very tough. It's my only chance at getting citizenship. I'm not sure what resources are available in the U.S. to document his name change, but I'm sure there must be some. I have to find a way to get documentation that they are the same person! He did not naturalize to the U.S. until late in life, so there must be more information on his naturalization record, which I can request from the US.

Re: Pignola, Potenza - Birth Record
1. where did you get the info that Rocco Vincenzo (who in later records is just Vincenzo) died at age 26???
2. James is an Americanization of the Italian first name Vincenzo, so I don't understand how you are turning a single individual into two different ones.
3. A naturalization record could indicate that Michele was known under a different surname in the U.S. My paternal grandfather used a different surname in the U.S. (not on his 1907 passenger list though), and that info appears on his application for his social security card AND on his naturalization record in the 1930s, although it is the naturalization record which specifies that, in the U.S., he would become known as and then it gives his first and last names. I know, however, that my grandfather's surname had already changed by 1913, when he married in Manhattan, but have no idea how that change came about. I can't find any kind of other U.S. record concerning the surname change.
4. Legal adoptions of foundlings in Italy was extremely rare. I did, however, find on the passenger list for one of my maternal grandfather's brothers, that it says that his destination in the U.S. was to his adopted father, and then it gives the name and address of my great grandfather who had previously emigrated to Brooklyn. On that passenger list, this brother had a surname invented by a town official, but his birth record is no where to be found among the records in this family's Sicilian town. All of his U.S. records though have the same surname as my grandfather, and not the invented one found on the passenger list. So it's possible the adoption process was done in the U.S., and not in Italy, and that my great grandfather took care of the adoption here in the U.S. before he sent for this "adopted son" to come here.
What I do find interesting is that Rocco Vincenzo Arlotti had a brother named Michele. I did find Michele's marriage in Pignola in 1869, but the marriage record for Vincenzo and Angela is no where to be found. The brother Michele was 22 at the time he married in 1869.
Anyway, I guess you need to see if you can get any info about Michele's surname change from a U.S. naturalization or some other record. Best of luck. Please keep us posted, if you discover anything.

Re: Pignola, Potenza - Birth Record
Hi Erudita (and all),
I hope you have been well! I've found a few pieces of information that are helpful with this case. If you remember, we determined that Michele Arlotto was a founding (born Michele Sperduto in Pignola). His obituary in Utica, N.Y. lists a brother (Joseph Arlotto) and two sisters (Arlotto) and his social security lists James Arlotto and Angela Vindette as parents. This Angela was most likely on his birth record as a wetnurse. Michael ended up marrying his wife (Maria Paciello) in Italy and his parents were left blank on their marriage record. They all ended up in Utica.
I recently discovered a census record (1900) for this family (it doesn't list Michael) and it includes the marriage date for Vincent (James?) Arlotto and Angela as 1863 (which means they were 13 years old when they married?!). It also says that they came over in 1890. Michael came over in 1895 and was listed as a Sperduto on the ship manifest.
I still can't seem to find the marriage record for Vincent and Angela, but even so, I wonder what type of information this would give to help establish a relationship between Michael and his parents.
Thanks for your feedback!

Re: Pignola, Potenza - Birth Record
Maria Felicia Paciello
Born 29 Dec 1877 Pignola
Entry #170
Parents: Michele Paciello and Gaetana Lattuchella (sp?)
She appears in the supplement.
I haven't found Michele Arlotto yet, but he's probably there somewhere. You can't just rely on the indices and sometimes have to check all entries including the supplements. From the obits, they seem to be about 10 years apart in age.
