Ciao - Spirio Family Research

Post by John Allegro »

I am planning a trip to Sicily and wanted to find any relatives of my maternal grandmother Alfonsa Spirio who was from Agrigento. Where would be the best place to start ?

There is an article on my website on planning a trip to the town of origin that you might find useful.

I just remembered that Veneziano was my mothers cousins last name, that is definitely my family.

You wouldn't happen to be able to find info on my grandfather Antonio Allegro, he had a brother named Dominic. We're not sure if he was from Sicilia or Napoli.

We are planning to get a retirement visa for Italy and this info is priceless.

Hi Marty,

Antonio Allegro settled in the iron bound section of Newark NJ and also owned a house in Gillette NJ
Alfonsa Spirio was his wife.
Unfortunately I don't know his birth date.
But the story goes that they met on the boat from Italy or at Ellis Island.

Marty,

Mille grazie
That's them. Joeseph is my uncle, Vivian is my mother.

Do you know of a website that shows when someone became naturalized?
I was wondering if citizenship was passed down to my mother or not.

Once again, thanks for the great info

I believe your Antonino ALLEGRA was born in Casalvecchio Siculo ( Messina province).. here the ship's manifest:

Antonino Allegra
New York Passenger Arrival Lists (Ellis Island)
Given Name Antonino
Surname Allegra
Last Place of Residence Casalvecchio
Event Date 28 Feb 1910
Age 23
Nationality Sicily
Departure Port Palermo
Arrival Port New York
Gender Male
Marital Status S
Ship Name Madonna

http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/EIDB ... e=manifest
mother: MARCHETTI Venera in Casalvecchio

Casalvecchio Siculo 1886 Birth index: Antonino Allegra son of Giuseppe #38
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1 ... cc=1887904

lacking the the page with #38, because:
previous page
#35 of 3th May 1886 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1 ... cc=1887904
and next page
#39 of 8th May 1886 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1 ... cc=1887904

lacking the page with the records #36, #37, #38..

However I am pretty sure that your ancestor was born in Casalvecchio Siculo...
hoping helpful,
