Need some help with prison document

Post by Jamiepalma2 »

Hi, I was wondering if someone can help me translate this prison sentencing document? It is several pages long. Im hoping to find out more about the crime (who was involved, who they committed the crime against, why, where, etc.) and information on Donato.

The following is a summary of the things that I've understood relating to the document. It was a very nasty and cowardly crime. Hopefully someone else, who has a bit more time and is fluent in Italian, might be able to extract further information for you. It probably wouldn't take too long because a lot of the statements are repeated.

There were six men involved in the crime as follows:

1. Rocco Di Girolamo, of deceased Zopito, 48 yo
2. Donato Di Girolamo, of deceased Nicola, 44 yo
3. Giuseppe Di Anastasio, of deceased Luigi, 26 yo
4. Donato D'Amico, of deceased Guilio, 25 yo
5. Giuseppe Cantagallo, of deceased Antonio, 42 yo
6. Zopito Savini, of deceased Michele, 35 yo

They were contadini (peasants), the first three men listed were from Pianella and the other three were from Loreto Aprutino.

The crimes occurred on the evening of 26 September 1892 in Pianella, in Contrada Grotte against the following victims:

Luigi di Girolamo
Angeladivina Fantacuzzi
Marianicola Pieragostini
Vincenzo di Girolamo (Luigi's father)

The crimes were basically robbery, violent assault and murder (maybe it was manslaughter - the blow to the head that occurred led to death.) It was obviously planned, the men went in armed with weapons.

Luigi di Girolamo, Angeladivina Fantacuzzi, and Vincenzo di Girolamo were incapaciated for a period after the attacks and unable to work. The head injuries to Marianicola Pieragostini were so severe that they caused a concussion and then death.

Items stolen in the robery were 300 lire in cash, 150 lire worth of gold objects, 72 lire of linen cloth

Rocco di Girolamo was sentenced to 25 years, 5 months, 10 days, Donato di Girolamo, Donato D'Amico, Giuseppe Cantagallo and Zopito Savino were sentenced to 21 years, two months and 7 days. Giuseppe Di Anastasio was sentenced to – I can't see it at the moment. I'm understanding that Rocco di Girolamo was the determinator.

Brava Angela, your descriptions of the facts is right!
I add that Giuseppe D'Anastasio was sentenced to life imprisonment, and all the offenders were also sentenced to pay £.2000 to Di Girolamo and Fantacuzzi.

Great job, Angela! :-)

In the death act of Maria Nicola Pieragostino (dated 27 September 1892), she is identified as the wife of Luigi di Girolamo, and of age 71. Death on 26 September 1892 at 7:30 PM on Contrada La Grotta.

Thank you all! Angela I appreciate everything you've done for me these past couple weeks! It might be best if I have the boards relating to Donato and his prison sentence removed. I am not sure what family still lives in Italy and if they would want this information about a family member on the internet. What are your thoughts?

Thank you, Pippo, and for adding to the thread. I must go back and take another look. Did it say why he got the longer term?

Thank you so much, Tessa. I thought you did an excellent job finding this document amongst his daughter's allegati. It's been a great team effort.

I do understand what you are saying, so just go with what you think is right. :) I was uncomfortable reading through the document and that's one reason why I summarised and padded the details. My thinking is that a lot of effort and time has been undertaken, researching info about Donato, and there may possibly be other decendants who want to know what happened, and may even want to look further into the story. It's history, it happened 124 years ago, and it is already on the internet, in Italian.

(I'm sure most of us have events that have happened in our ancestry which we are not proud of, and would rather not admit to – people are people and sometimes poverty, hunger, desperation etc bring out the very worst in people or they just make really bad decisions.) This has been a tragic story, not only for the victims, but also for Donato's wife and their children and I'm sure would've had a huge impact on everyone who knew them.
