Grandmother Birth Certificate/Italian records question

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Grandmother Birth Certificate/Italian records question

Post by forestmaiden71 »

Hello! I have a very random question and one hopefully easier one -

I'd like to apply for my Italian citizenship through my grandmother (who was born here, but both her parents were born and married in Italy). My first question - I'd like to request the records for her parents birth and marriages. They were both born and married in Valenzano, Bari. Is there an address I can send the request to? Also, I have looked for form letters, and I just wondered if there is one anyone recommends?

Ok, now the random question - my grandmother was born at home, so her parents filed for her birth certificate themselves. The town clerks completely messed up her certificate in many ways - nothing major...except her sex. It states that she was born a male, not a female. Now, I know this is an error, as she bore several children. However, in talking to the state I found out that in order to have it changed (she's deceased) I'd have to have a court order. Is this going to be a major problem when I apply for Italian citizenship? I'd rather not go through the hassle of the court order, as my father's birth certificate states she is his mother. But, I'd feel better with an idea of if this is going to be a big deal or not. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

My grandmother - Rose Ungar b. 1919 d. 1999
Her parents - Angela DeVivo b. 1891 in Valenzano d. 1940
Joseph Ungar (Giuseppe Ungari) b. 1885 in Valenzano d. 1966
I'd like to request Joseph and Angela's birth certificate and their wedding certificate. ( They married on Valenzano in 1908)

Is that what you're looking for?

Thank you very much! Would I need to change anything if I need 3 copies of each certificate?
