record #117
this is the death act for my 4 GGF, Modestino Riccio.

what I read is that he leaves 3 children, a male Luigi, and 2 females called Angelamaria & Giovanna. Then I read "morto sotto la Pietre, nel giorno antecdenta."

he died under the stones?? - am I accurate with deciphering the handwriting? might there be a less literal meaning?

thanks,
donna

Maybe there was a landslide in a quarry. What was the profession of Modestino? There are more deaths in those days in Aviano?

thanks for correcting my spelling,.
i do not know Modestino's DOB, age, or profession. On the marriage act of this daughter (my 3 GGM) it is only indicated that he is deceased. She was born in 1790s, so at this time i do not have access to those records.

i am no expert on the town of Ariano Irpino or that area of the country. i have reviewed a century's worth of civil records and there was never any indication that laborers were working in quarries or mines - people were mostly contadini. so, a quarry is a good a guess as any.

do you think there is any significance to the writer using the capitol letter P for Pietre?

thanks again,
Donna
