Questions about this baptism record: Pasquale Genovese was baptized on 24th of November 1771 at San Bartolomeo Church in Gambatesa and born at 1:00 pm on the same day? Who are Vittoria Guglielmi and Maria Mastrogiorgio noted in this record?
Thanks for your help.

Re: 1771 Baptism, Gambatesa
I am understanding Vittoria to be the Godmother, and she is the daughter of Antonio and deceased Maria Mastrogiorgio. (There are so many different words in these records for Godmother (Commadra). I call my Godmother Comara and my Godfather Compara but maybe that was our dialect.) Anyway, someone might confirm.

Angela,
Before I posted my questions, i went to my Langenscheidt Publishers, Inc. "Standard Italian Dictionary" to find the word "commadra" which was not listed; I then went to the English section for godmother and found "Madrina" listed. I also tried Goggle Translate for "commadra," no luck.
Angela, did your parents speak Italian at home when you were young? Thanks for your help.

I read "Commadre" (final "e") which is a variation of Comare and a synonim of Madrina = Godmother

John, mostly in the records I have seen madrina (godmother) and padrino (godfather).JOHN08 wrote:Angela,

My parents always spoke to us in their dialect which they called Saponarese, and I think it's basically the Lucanian dialect. Most of my friends parents, who were from towns close to Naples, spoke to me in Napoletano which I mostly understand quite well as long as it is not spoken too fast. Italian was only spoken when our Northern Italian friends visited but I never really understood it.

Angela,
Could you translate the section of this record that starts with "certificato" and ends with Felicita Lionardi ?
I found the marriage record for Pasquale and Felicita; they were married on the 18th of June 1821. I will post it when I have finished my translation (probably, have many questions about it).

Re: 1771 Baptism, Gambatesa
Sure.
I am understanding that it is saying that it was certified from me (or the certificate was signed by me), here, the undersigned Arch Priest in Gambatesa, keeper of the said books, today, 22 March 1821 (the information was taken from the Books of Baptism.)
(Certificate/Information) to be used for the marriage of Pasquale Genovese with Felicita Lionardi.)
It's fairly standard to see this kind of wording on the bottom or these extracts from Church and Civil Records that were required before a marriage could take place.
John, I've just edited my post here which I have highlighted in blue. I realised that I missed something out.

Angela,
This is the info I needed to complete my translation of this record for a relative who is Pasquale Genovese's 3rd great-grandniece.
Angela, by the way, the two best decisions that I made when I first started my genealogical research, would believe ten years ago: first, going to a Family History Center to do my research (learned a lot from others doing research of their Italian ancestors); second, joining Italiangenealogy.com (in 2009) and constantly reading the postings and the reply's from those who are more than willing to share their knowledge.
Thank you.

It's always been a pleasure, John. You are very welcome. This forum is a very special place with very generous, gifted people. Always lots of backup here also, when we are a little unsure.JOHN08 wrote:Angela,
