Finding grandpa's birthplace in Italy

Post by kuri77 »

Hi,
First time here, just lost my dad and in his papers found out grandpa changed his name upon arriving in England at the beginning of the 1900's. His name was Leonardo Ariodonti. Is this a common name and I should go to a paid genealogy site or is this an easy name to track down? My daughters and I are planning on visiting Italy this summer now and would love to look up unknown to us relatives.
Thanks, Chris

Or his parents names?

I can't find any reference to this surname whatsoever so I'm thinking it's Ariodante like adelfio suggested. This is still a pretty rare name, but according to this map, not specific to one area: http://www.gens.info/italia/it/turismo- ... IT8VhsrLIU

In England I found the surname ARIODANTI... :
2 marriage records

Marriages Jun 1893 (>99%)

Ariodanti Giovanni Holborn 1b 1235 Scan available - click to view
Ariodanti Remualdo Holborn 1b 1235 Scan available - click to view

https://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
no record of Leonardo....
However on 1911 census, some Ariodanti coming from Parma area, and I believe that also Genova area or near... could be right... who know?
just a suggestion,
regards,
suanj

Was it possible your grandfather was a foundling child and the surname was one assigned by civil authorities ?
This was the case for my grandfather (who was reclaimed by his mother- my great grandmother who had given up her only child. She was also a foundling.

It's still possible, even so, to find a birth record for your grandfather - which would relate the circumstance he was found in and who may have taken him to foster or care for. It's a matter of locating the right city he may have been left in (not necessarily the city he resided in in adulthood).

Hi Barbarossa,
Your thought could be right, but maybe for the old time, because in effects I found a Ariodanti born around 1846 in Varese Ligure, and he was a foundling... So maybe it could be a surname given to foundlings, it could be possible..... However I am convinced that the birth area of Leonardo could be around Genova and Parma....if the birthplace was around Genova, and born after 1866 maybe we can search, knowing almost some other detaiil helpful for the search...

a search on "ariodante" on antenati comes up with one reference for birth

Giuseppe Ariodonte
Apri
Comune/Località : Trani, Bari, Italy
Data : 01 Sep 1884
Tipologia di Atto : Nascite

http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.i ... 7.jpg.html

a similar on the spelling ending "i"

Ariodanti - no results

this was a wide search with no other parameters than the surname. Although I do find the name search feature on the site results primarily in dates post 1860
