What's His Middle Name?

Post by amasi3 »

Hi!

Looking for some help determining the middle name of Rocco De Orsi (Marasco), record #51 on the left page.
Thanks!

It looks like Julio to me, which would be a variant spelling of Giulio

The first character didn't look like a J to me, but I'll search through the handwriting to see how the J's are written.

I was thinking it might be Tulio, an alternate spelling of Tullio derived from the Latin Tullius.

The record nr is 55 not 51...
I also read Julio, both in the record and the side note.
I do not think it is Tulio, because the "T" in Teresa (record 56) is completely different.

I saw this earlier and like the poster, I also wondered whether it might be Tulio. I then debated Tulio and Julio and was going to check the indices. I think the poster should check the index as well, it might be clearer there.

Amasi3: These records are on line. Can you post the "link" to the index if you have it?

Impressive! That was very quick, Livio. How did you do that?

Here's the index: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1 ... cc=2043547

(I piggy-backed off your find.)

I don't think Tulio.

Thanks for posting the index, Livio. I had meant to do that yesterday as well. I thought that it would help clarify the middle name, but it just complicated things further for me. The third letter in the index looks like the letter "i" to me, but I don't see it in the record.

Hi Livio, Angela and Erudita!

Thank you all for your responses to my question! I wasn't getting notifications on your replies and didn't check this thread until now. I apologize for not responding in a timely manner to your requests for the online record links.

I now think Icilio is the correct name.
Rocco's sister appears to have the feminine form, Icilia, as her middle name:

Here is the 1882 Death Index for Vietri di Potenza, concerning Bice De Orsi (Marasco), whose birth act I posted above.
Unfortunately her middle name is not included in the death index for comparison:

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1 ... cc=2043547

It seems the only place the third letter, "i" in Icili@ is dotted in on the death index located by Livio.

I'm reading Bice Talia.

The given name Icilio is correct.
If you look at the body of the record you will see that the third letter “i” in the name Icilio is much clearer there. (Things are always much clearer in hindsight, of course. :) )

Hi Angela,

I missed the dotted 'i' in the body of the text on Rocco's Birth Act. I can see that now. Things are much easier to see in hindsight.

I initially thought Bice's middle name was Talia, but hadn't come across it before and wasn't sure if I was reading it correctly. I second guessed myself, but I'm glad you think Talia is correct.

On the subject of weird names, have any of you come across the name Oviddio? When written, it looks like Ouddio - what I thought it was for the longest time. However, I came across "Ovidio" online, derived from the Latin Ovidus which means "shepherd". Would you agree that Oviddio is likely an alternate spelling of Ovidio?
