So, Sole is her surname and she's from Bisacquino?

Yes, Steve, the mother's surname appears to be Sole. Mariano Zito was from Bisacquino. Those church records are online. I helped someone with them a very long time ago and don't remember if there were indices or not.

Thanks for that Erudita. It appears there is no index for these volumes, or at least for the volume I'm searching (Battesimi 1727-1738) in which I believe I will find both Mariano Zito and the woman he later married, Giovanna Laudicina.

I'm uncertain about the format of these records. There are two or three names in the margins of each record. I would expect these names to be the names of the baptized - but three names in most cases? Or could it be the names of the parents are also in the margins?

Some records show as many as four or five names in the margins.

Maybe the priest is listing the names of subsequent children in the margins?

But then the dates of their baptisms are missing...

Actually, there are index pages. I searched over 200 pages of records only to stumble upon the index at the end of the volume. So far, no Mariano in the records or in the index. There are other volumes within this timeframe though. Now that I know there are indices at the end of each volume it should be a bit easier to find who I'm looking for.

Steve
The multiple names in the margins are the names given to each infant at baptism. You'd be surprised at how many names infants were given in some of the towns at baptism. The problem is that, in subsequent records for the individual, only one of those names may be used, and it may not be the first one. This is particularly true when you have earlier baptism records, and then later civil ones, for the same individual.

I had no luck finding Mariano Zito in the Bisacquino Battesimi 1727-1738 records, so I looked for the Marriage Record of his parents (Giovanni Zito & Giuseppa Sole) instead and found this... (record on bottom right)

It looks to me like the date of the marriage was 6 Oct, 1726. But I'm having difficulty with the handwriting. I don't see dates of Banns and I can't decipher the married couples parents names or tell whether they were alive or deceased at the time of the wedding.

If Mariano's father was from Calatafimi wouldn't he and Giuseppa have moved there (and Mariano have been born there) after their marriage in Bisacquino?

I can't thank you enough Erudita!

There actually are indices for the baptism records, but they are buried. I'm not finished trying to find them for the years in question. To answer your question, if Mariano's father was from Calatafimi, he would have moved with his bride there after his marriage in Bisacquino, but the move was dependent on his occupation and the type of household in which he resided in that town. It's a complicated subject.

As to the marriage record, it is dated Oct 6, 1726, as you stated. There are no dates given for the banns of marriage in the record. Giovanni was single and the legitimate and natural son of Paolo (living) and deceased Francesca Zito. They had been a married couple in this town, when she was alive.

The bride, Giuseppa Suli, which is how I thought the spelling of her surname was supposed to be (I should have mentioned this to you yesterday) was the legitimate and natural daughter of Antonino and Grazia Suli.

The witnesses: The first one, with the title Don (can't decipher his first name) Terrusa (surname is currently Terruso in Palermo, I believe). The other witness looks like Filippo Pancamo.

It's interesting that this marriage record from Bisacquino does not give the mothers' maiden names. Is that a custom that varies from one comune to another?

It bothers me that I am unable to locate the marriage record of Mariano Zito and Giovanna Laudicina.

The pubblicazioni shows announces their marriage at the Chiesa San Giuliano Martire in 1754 but I cannot locate the couple's marriage record either in the indices or by scouring through all of the marriage records of that church for that year.

Is it possible the marriage was published but never occurred?

Nevermind my last question. That doesn't make sense. It was the marriage record of one of the offspring of this couple that led me to search for their marriage record. They must have been married. I have the marriage pubblicazioni, so why can't I find the actual marriage record?

I'm sorry that I never got a chance to finish looking for the baptism indices this morning. One is at the end, as you said above, but the other one that I found this morning isn't. Both links are below. There may be others with that group of records, but I haven't had a chance to look for them.

I'm trying to keep up with your many questions. I don't recall if I told you this previously or not, but in the mid 1500s, the Sacred Council of Trent, dictated that the local parishes had to keep registers of the events in their parishes such as births/baptisms, marriages, and deaths. It did not, however, dictate the format that those records had to take. So if a priest chose to include the mother's surname (what we call a "maiden name"), then it's written in the records. It seems though that many priests, or their assistants who recorded the events, didn't include that info. Sometimes you accidentally stumble upon it in another record, but often you don't. It's a major disappointment, as far as I'm concerned.
