Vitiello in Algeria/Tunisia
Vitiello in Algeria/Tunisia
Hello, I'm new to this forum. My name is Loic, French living in Utah USA
My mother has been "stuck" on her grand-mother's genealogy because they are Italian ancestors living in Algeria/Tunisia.
We are trying to find information on Salvator Vitiello married to Anne Marie Jeacorno. We have no information on these individuals except that they had a daughter named Concetta Vitiello, born in LaSalle Tunisia in 1873, passed away in 1948
How to proceed to find Italian ancestors in the mid 1800s in Tunisia/Algeria?
The Vitiello family seems to have some noble ancestry in Naples and Venice

Re: Vitiello in Algeria/Tunisia
If you know the town or comune the family lived in in Sicily you will be able to find the birth record there for the child born in Tunisia. You would be looking in records for 1873. If they were citizens from Sicily and living and working in Tunisia a copy of the birth is sent back to Sicily. With the help of a cousin living in France who knows french was able to retrieve a copy of our cousin Vincenza batismal record who was born in Tunisia while her Madre and Nonna were visiting family there. She was 97 y/o when she was able to see her record. A year prior to her death. It is possible so please do not give up.

Hi Loic,
here a Salvatore Vitiello, naturalized ---
http://jpu.aieuls.com/Naturalisations/N ... a1930V.htm
born in Torre del Greco (Naples)... the age don't matching with the possible birthyear of your Salvatore, but however is interesting... maybe Torre del Greco could be the right birthplace.. but you don't know no Salvatore birthdate or parent's names, and the birthplace is just a my suggestion, so it is a bit hard...
best,
suanj

I am back!
Well I searched again and I don't found the Birth record of Concetta in La Calle, Algerie,
but I believe that I found some her sister; I don't searched abt brothers, just some sister:
here the Birth of
LA CALLE 1866 Naissance VITIELLO ROSA
Rosa Vitiello born on 1866 daughter of Salvatore Vitiello 37 old, and Maria Jacono 33 old, coming from Ventotene (Isle), Italy
http://anom.archivesnationales.culture. ... cte=310285
LA CALLE 1870 Naissance VITIELLO MARIA, CAUDITTA same parents
http://anom.archivesnationales.culture. ... cte=310542
LA CALLE 1876 Naissance VITIELLO CANDIDA, MARIA same parents
http://anom.archivesnationales.culture. ... cte=310774
I am pretty sure that Salvatore Vitiello wife, well the her maiden name was Jacono and no Jeacorno and these are the ancestors that you are searching for.
The civil records are availables, and Salvatore was born around 1829 and the his wife was born around 1833.
If you agree with my find, you can write in Ventotene and to request the Birth certificate of the couple and marriage certificate, they married in Ventotene on 1855 (info by Rosa Vitiello Birth record) Here the email of Ventotene civil records office:

Re: Vitiello in Algeria/Tunisia
You are an ANGEL! My mother is going to be so HAPPY. I've translated your message in French and sent it to her in France. She needs to confirm if she has any memory of her great ants. Most of her siblings are still alive (quite old!) and hopefully we can confirm that you have hit the jackpot on this mistake of the last name "Jacono"
I'm surprised that this "Jacono" is having children at 40 yr old! But she seemed to have another girl 3 years later!!
I will wait for her answer but can only be deeply thankful for your persistence in this matter. Let me get back to you shortly

Re: Vitiello in Algeria/Tunisia
One more question: do they understand English in the Ventotene civil record office?
Re: Vitiello in Algeria/Tunisia
The #2 and the #3 sisters are similar first names, just inverted I believe that Cauditta could be Candida misspelled, if so, the #2 died, maybe...
No sure, just a my idea, or also it could be possible that the birthdate of your Concetta is wrong, and her name was Maria Cauditta/Canditta and anyone called she Concetta, who know?
I not searched abt Concetta brothers, but surely she had some brother... It could be interesting to find also some marriage if available, maybe knowing more, your mother can remember well.. I am pretty sure that the find is right...
Happy to help you, best regards,
suanj

No they understand italian language, and the request must be made very well and with your picture of Id card attached. You must explain the use of these certificates ( dual citizenship by ius sanguinis) etc...
So in good italian and will all possible data and infos abt you also, otherwise the clerk ignore it, simply so.

Re: Vitiello in Algeria/Tunisia
Thank you for your answer. I have sent an email to the clerk of Ventotene.
Also, my mother is providing me a death certificate and marriage certificate for Paul Certa and Concetta Vitiello. Now she remembers that it might be Jacono. So I think we are on a good lead. Since the data about Morocco is NOT online, my mother is making a request to the French consulate for this protectorate. It will take one month until we get more information.

Re: Vitiello in Algeria/Tunisia

Re: Vitiello in Algeria/Tunisia
The third record you gave me (Candida Maria) has some issues:
1. Dad is Salvator, not Salvatore
2. He is a sailor, not a "Corailleur"
3. His wife is called "Jacola Maria", not Jacono
4. He is 45 yr old in 1876, which would make him born in 1831, and his wife is 40 yr old, born around 1836. Both birth dates are 3 years off the previous records
Don't you think it's a lot of error for one record? I know they were married in Ventotene too...

Loic
You can be sure abt the recird, because the work is no important, anyone change it, the age, here are so many replies abt the ages wrong on the records, also in Italy same person stated wrong age in the birth recird of childrens, you think that all peoples were able to read, to count, to write? No, also the clerk in old past had the difficulties to help the informant abt the age... To help in the count.... The large part of people was illitterates...abt Jacola, I don' t find this surname and I am pretty sure that was Jacono and no Jacola, who know what understand the clerk? One speak neapolitan dialect one speak french language, and no one was able to correct.
Abt Salvador and Salvatore, but Loic it is same first name!

Re: Vitiello in Algeria/Tunisia
well this daughter died on 1875LA CALLE 1870 Naissance VITIELLO MARIA, CAUDITTA same parents
http://anom.archivesnationales.culture. ... cte=310542
LA CALLE 1875 Décès VITIELLO MARIA, CANDIDA
the difference abt the spelling of first name means just that on the Birth record the clerk was no able with italian names, and ditto abt parent's names
here the Death record, she was 4 old and the parent's names are ok
http://anom.archivesnationales.culture. ... cte=317937
now you know that just 1 Vitiello Maria Cauditta ( really the first name must be Candida because Cauditta don't exist, it is a bad transcription, and also Canditta, is a wrong version of Candida) was born.. so 1 year after, when another female born they called Candida Maria....
