Piazza del Galdo, Mercato San Severino, Salerno
I am going to Italy in one month and want to (1) hopefully find my grandmother's home in Piazza del Galdo and (2) hopefully find more information on her parents (I have their names). She was born in Piazza del Galdo 1892 and I have her birth certificate which she apparently got a copy of in 1956 when she returned for a visit. Attached is a copy. Is it from an office in Salerno or Mercato san Severino? Where should I go to find more information on her parents? When she returned for her visit, she told her children that they had never sold their home when they immigrated and that relatives were still squatting in it. Perhaps they still are - is the best thing to ask someone in Piazza del Galdo if any Grimaldi or Spisso (her mothers name) still live in town? Is there anyway I can find this out while still in the USA?

Piazza del Galdo is a very small place, so maybe some old people still remember their family, though they don't live there any longer. The one problem might be if they could suspect you want to claim their home (it wouldn't be possible, according to Italian law, but they could fear it...).
If you want more info about family, you have to go to the Comune of Mercato San Severino, Ufficio Stato Civile, Piazza Ettore Imperio 6. You better announce your visit and the info you need, so they have time to search.
However, if you have your GGF's name, you can try here, too (enrollment lists for the province of Salerno):

Thank you! It doesn't look like Piazza del Galdo comes up as an address when I put that in the search bar .. only other towns. If one lives in Piazza del Galdo is the mailing address Mercato San Severino?

Yes, it is. Followed by street and #, of course.

RE: obtaining birth and marriage certificates from Commune of Mercato San Severino. PippoM gave me the address, but can I fax my request? I see on the commune web site the fax number. Also, since I will be there in 3 weeks, can I request information and ask if I may pick it up and pay any fees then? Are all records at this location, even marriage records or do I need to contact the church in Piazza del Galdo for marriage information?
