Difficult time finding marriage record-Lorenzo

Post by CiaoGina »

Hi all
I haven't been here for awhile but you were so helpful with my genealogy/Italian citizenship document search. I am nearly done gathering everything I need but still looking for my grandparents marriage certificate or license or anything official stating that they were married. I have the 1930 and 1940 NYC census stating that they are husband and wife. I have checked NY and surrounding states. My grandmother was married previously plus she was Jewish and he Catholic, and I won't be offended if anyone suggests that maybe they never officially married because I am beginning to think the same

Anyway if anyone has suggestions for where to look that might not be the obvious places I would love to hear it and if anyone wants to try. I do have her SS#

His name was Pietroangelo (Peter) Lorenzo born NYC 1901 She was Sadie Cohen born in Russia 1893

She told my father that they got married at city hall.

Thanks for any help

It doesn't necessarily follow. I have several aunts and uncles for whom I can't find entries in the Baltimore City birth index, yet I'm reasonably sure that they were officially born. :-)

Seriously, I've come across at least one case where I was able to find an entry in the local Baltimore newspaper noting the filing of a marriage license, yet could not find the record in the Baltimore marriage index.

Anyway, can you further narrow the likely time frame of the marriage? The part of NYC where such a record is likely to be on file?

Ancestry gives an entry in the "U.S., Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007" showing a Peter Lorenzo who was married to a Sadie Cohen, with a child named Samuel Lorenzo.

Curiously, there is also a death record for Sadie Lorenzo (born 12/22/1893) in the SSDI records which has a "Suggested Record" pointer to a marriage between Sadie Cohen and Frank Spirto in Manhattan in 1922. Related?

Yes those are both her. I have requested info from the SS office. Cohen was her first husband.Spierto was her second. Her marriage to Peter Lorenzo was around 1928. I have checked Maryland and NJ.

I also have a certified, apostiled 1930 census which shows they were married and I am hoping the consulate takes that as proof. I have heard others have

The 1930 census suggests ~1925, though I'm guessing you've tried as much of the 1922-1930 span as reasonably possible.

Hello everyone
I am updating this post and am so frustrated. No luck finding the marriage record. The sf consulate says this or a statement from the court with after many calls to the NYSC I am realizing I need to hire a lawyer Aargh Any referrals? Thanks

Have you tried "Reclaim the Records" database?
