Am I eligible?

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Am I eligible?

Post by littlelion95 »

Here's the situation:

My great-grandfather: born Italian citizen 1900 - maintained lifelong citizenship
My grandfather: born Italian citizen 1936 ; naturalized to Canadian citizenship 1959 (unknowing of loss of Italian citizenship as dual citizen was not allowed at the time); regained Italian citizenship 1992 when the opportunity was provided for a 5 year window
My father: born Canadian citizen 1962
Myself: born Canadian citizen 1995

(Side-note: there is no option on my grandmothers side)

We have been previously told that because my great grandfather was a naturalized Canadian citizen at the time of my fathers birth, neither myself nor my father are eligible for citizenship. Due to this I know I cannot seek citizenship via my grandfather specifically.

However, I am curious if I would be able to acquire citizenship via my great-grandfather, or if my grandfathers denaturalization breaks the chain - no exceptions? Does his loss of citizenship due to the disallowance of dual citizenship at his time of naturalization mean he "renounced his right" to Italian citizenship, or that he was forcefully denaturalized? Either way, is there any way around this?

I have read that had my grandfather been born a Canadian citizen to my Italian great-grandfather it would have been possible. My question is whether his loss of citizenship specifically prior to 1992 puts a stop on the whole line perpetually.

I understand its a long shot, and that it would have been fine IF my father had been born or was a minor after my grandfather had regained citizenship. If anyone knows the details of denaturalization vs. renunciation vs. "renouncing the right" to citizenship as well as if any of this is possible I would greatly appreciate the help! As well as what the status is of those who lost their citizenship due to the disallowance of dual citizenship prior to 1992 is in relation to this situation.

Thanks!
