help with death record

Post by khoney »

Once again I am hoping someone can help with a document. What I am particularly curious about is what is written in the line between time of death and Biase’s age?

http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.i ... ewsIndex=0

Number 113

Biase Gaetano Allegretti died 10 October 1862, age 87, profession ?, son of Deceased Giuseppe and deceased Porzia Scalera.
Thank you

I'm understanding that he was a religious man who belonged to the community of Santa Maria del Sagittario, which was a monastery constructed in the 12th century in the town of Chiaromonte. As to his occupation, it looks like arco al ritiro (something to do with retreats).

I'm wondering whether he may have been a "retired monk" when he died. I see the word Religioso, which yes translates to religious etc, but I've also understood it to refer to Monk? The word "ritiro" can also be interpreted as retirement. Just brainstorming here.

I'm inclined to agree with Angela that the word religioso is used as a synonym for the word monaco or monk. After the word religioso in the record is the name Salvatore, which I'm assuming is the name he took when he joined this religious community.

Possibly. I was also thinking that he may have been a Salvatorian Brother, but maybe then they would have written Salvatoriani not Salvatore.

The order I found associated with this monastery were the Frati Cisterciensi, or the Cistercian friars-sometimes called the Bernadines.

Fantastic! That makes perfect sense. I can't believe I didn't notice "col nome" there. Great spotting.

Grazie!

Thank you all for following up on this! I used Google Translate on Mmogno's post and came up with the following which I hope one of you can confirm/correct.

So it would be:
"Who stated, that in the said day of October this year, at four o'clock, Biase Gaetano Allegretti died with the name of religious Savior, having belonged to the Community of Santa Maria del Sagittario".

Again, thank you,
Karen

Karen
The name he took when he joined this monastic community was Salvatore. Although the name can translate to Savior, his name would correctly have been Salvatore (possibly Brother Salvatore, as a monk).

Thank you Erudita,

That makes much better sense to me than the google translate version.

mmogno also wrote the following to Angela:
Potrebbe essere stato commesso un errore nella scrittura: le parole "col nome" aggiunte alla fine di una riga sbagliata.

There could have been an error committed in the writing: the words "col nome" (with the name) added at the end of the wrong row (line). I agree with mmogno. The words "col nome" seem to have been written in the wrong place in the record.
