Marchese - Out of Wedlock Birth 1905

Post by vortex150 »

Hello I have an out of wedlock birth for Giuseppe Marchese on 27 March 1905 record on family search for Carlentini, Syracuse, Sicily, Italy.

His mom looks to be Concetta Marchese age 41.

Not sure what the notations mean under the right side column if someone could help.
Thanks very much.

See attached.

Giuseppe was born from Concetta's union with a man who did not consent to be named and who was not a relative in any degree which would prove to be an obstacle to the recognition.

In the margin, Giuseppe was recognized as the natural son of Gaetano Marchese by an act dated March 18, 1920? Not sure if the last digit is a zero, as it is cut off

Thanks very much erudita74.

So in the body of the birth record, the man does not consent to be named and is not a relative of Concetta.

Then something happens later in 1920 where he is recognized as the natural father, by the same last name of Marchese as Concetta Marchese. But even with his last name the same, he is not related.

Do the 2 symbols in the margin under the name have any significance? The first looks like an e symbol with a dot, next to the statement, then the 2nd statement precedes by a loop symbol followed by Marchese Gaetano.

Does the e and the loop symbols mean something? I am thinking the loop stands for marriage?

Thanks very much!!

I honestly don't know what dots you are referring to. This is what is in the margin of the record

e` stato riconosciuto suo figlio naturale di Marchese Gaetano con atto 18 marzo 1920 (recognized as the natural son of Gaetano Marchese with an act dated March 18, 1920(?).

under that is the name of the notary and the date June 26, 1925. That would be the date the notation was added in the margin of the record.

As to the surnames of the couple being the same, Marchese, when the record reads they were not related in any degree which would prove to be an obstacle to the recognition of the infant as a natural son, the degree the record is talking about is anything closer than the 4th degree. So, Concetta and Gaetano could have been cousins sharing a common ancestor but in the 4th degree, 5th degree, 6th degree, etc. But, just because they had the same surname does not mean they were related at all. In some towns, surnames were very common and not all individuals with a common surname had common ancestry. The only way to prove or disprove common ancestry is if you have access to records going back numerous generations.
