Help to decipher Surname

Post by Rossonero3 »

This surname is giving me a tough time, it looks like "Aponese"?
The attached document is a table of contents for surnames beginning with A.
Numbers 25, 40, and 144 are all the same surname and are the ones I can't figure out.
Number 31 is "Alfano"
Number 67 is "Alianiello"

Grazie Mille!

Here's another TOC attached from a few years later than the previous one, it looks to me like the name could be "Azzanese", which does still exist in Potenza, what do you think?

Look at #134, I think it's the same surname

Surnames and street names can be the two most difficult things to decipher in a record, especially when you're first starting to work with records in a town. The following website, although not foolproof, might be of help to you with surnames. I believe it was comprised from passenger lists, so you won't find every surname that ever existed in a town but it can be a helpful website anyway. Start by typing in the name of the town, in this case Barile. Then look at the surnames listed for that town and try to compare them to what you think you see in the record. If there is nothing there that is even close to what you think you see, then go outside of the town. Click on the province name, in this case Potenza, and find a big city within the province. I would go with the city of Potenza and then search for surnames in that city. You will probably now see a lot more surnames for the city of Potenza than you see for the town of Barile. If there is still nothing close to what you think you see in a record, then try searching a major city in a nearby province, such as the city of Matera in Matera Province, for example.

For street names in records-should you come across any-I do a google search- Stradario e mappa di (followed by the name of the town). Then you will get a lot of current street names. Of course, some street names no longer exist or have been renamed, but some are still the same. So sometimes this website can help you as well.

Wow thank you Erudita! Those look like useful sites/tools. I have noticed that the street names I have come across for these records in Barile do not seem to exist anymore or have been renamed, too bad.
